Guatemala is one of the most unequal countries in Latin America - but also one where community tourism makes the biggest difference. Here, travel money really does go into the pockets of indigenous families if you choose your partners carefully. Here's how to make a useful trip to Guatemala.<\/em><\/p>\n

The economic context of travel<\/h2>\n

Tourism accounts for around 7 % of Guatemalan GDP. It is the leading source of foreign currency after remittances from the diaspora. But according to an UNWTO study, out of every 100 USD spent by an average traveler in developing countries, only 5 to 10 USD actually benefit local communities.<\/p>\n

Five Guatemalan partners make a real difference<\/h2>\n

1. San Juan La Laguna textile cooperative (Atitl\u00e1n)<\/h3>\n

On Lake Atitl\u00e1n, the village of San Juan La Laguna<\/strong> is home to several cooperatives of Mayan Tz'utujile weavers who have replaced chemical dyes with vegetable dyes (avocado, indigo, cochineal, tree bark). Asociaci\u00f3n Lema\u2019<\/strong> and Casa Flor Ixcaco<\/strong> welcome visitors for 2-3 hour workshops where they learn how to dye and weave on a backstrap loom.<\/p>\n

How to integrate<\/strong> 1 workshop in the Atitl\u00e1n program, USD 30-60 per person. Profits fund education for village girls.<\/p>\n

2. Asociaci\u00f3n Maya Mam de Todos Santos Cuchumat\u00e1n<\/h3>\n

In the Cuchumat\u00e1n sierra (3,000 meters above sea level, in the west of the country), Mam communities have preserved unique pre-Columbian traditions - the Mayan calendar, distinctive red and white costumes, cofrad\u00eda ceremonies. L\u2019Asociaci\u00f3n Maya<\/strong> organizes family stays (3-5 days) to experience the Mayan fire lighting ceremony, Mayan chocolate making and coffee picking.<\/p>\n

Frame<\/strong> 50-70 USD\/day full board. 100 % of revenue goes to families. Capacity limited to a maximum of 8 passengers.<\/p>\n

3. De La Gente (Antigua)<\/h3>\n

This community cooperative based in San Miguel Escobar (a suburb of Antigua) brings together 50 families of small-scale coffee growers. It offers tours of the finca, Guatemalan cooking classes with local people, and an ethical volunteer program (only with validated skills, no ill-conceived \u00abvoluntourism\u00bb).<\/p>\n

How to integrate<\/strong> Coffee day (35 USD) or cooking class (45 USD) can be integrated into any Antigua stay. Revenues are paid directly to producers.<\/p>\n

4. Asociaci\u00f3n Ak\u2019 Tenamit (R\u00edo Dulce, Livingston)<\/h3>\n

This indigenous association q'eqchi\u2019<\/strong> and garifuna<\/strong> runs a secondary school for young people from isolated communities on the R\u00edo Dulce. The restaurant Buga Mama<\/strong> in Livingston is run entirely by the students of the hospitality school. A lunch here = direct support for schooling.<\/p>\n

5. Ut'z Hua Hospitality (Quetzaltenango \/ Xela)<\/h3>\n

For those who want to learn Spanish in Guatemala, Quetzaltenango<\/strong> is the best destination in the country. Several solidarity schools exist - Ut'z Hua<\/strong> is one of the most committed, with immersion in indigenous families, individual courses (4 h\/day), and an integrated social program (1 USD\/hour course donated to rural schools).<\/p>\n

\u00abResponsible tourism in Guatemala is not a posture. It's a series of small choices that make a real difference in a country where 60 % of the population lives below the poverty line.\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Here are a few concrete rules that we apply and recommend:<\/p>\n

  1. Ask before photographing people<\/strong>, especially in Mayan communities. A silent photo and an exchanged smile are better than a stolen snapshot. The Mayans, for complex cultural reasons (soul-related beliefs), can be very reticent.<\/li>\n
  2. Buying directly from craftsmen rather than middlemen<\/strong>. The margin is huge - on a huipil sold for 800 quetzals at a retailer, the weaver may only get 100. Go to the village.<\/li>\n
  3. Refuse tours that visit schools or orphanages<\/strong>. Ill-conceived \u00abvoluntourism\u00bb does more harm than good.<\/li>\n
  4. Prefer local accommodation<\/strong> to international channels. 80 % of revenues remain in the country.<\/li>\n
  5. Learn a few words of Spanish and - if possible - a few words of the local Mayan language<\/strong> (kaqchikel to Atitl\u00e1n, k'iche\u2019 to Chichi). The gesture is immense.<\/li>\n
  6. Respect religious rituals<\/strong> : ceremonies in cofrad\u00edas, Semana Santa processions, funeral marches. Do not film without authorization.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Carbon offsetting and ecotourism<\/h2>\n
