Belize understood this earlier than its neighbors. It's one of the countries in Central America where responsible tourism isn't a marketing slogan\u2014it's a measurable reality.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2>The context: a country that lives off its nature<\/h2>\n<p>Tourism accounts for about 40 % of Belize\u2019s GDP\u2014the highest rate in Central America. The barrier reef, the rainforest, and marine biodiversity are literally the backbone of the country\u2019s economy. That is why Belize has taken radical steps that few countries dare to take:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>2018<\/strong> total moratorium on offshore oil exploration. Belize is the first country in the world to have banned offshore drilling to protect its reef.<\/li>\n<li><strong>2009<\/strong> ban on trawling in all Belizean waters.<\/li>\n<li><strong>36 %<\/strong> of the land and marine territory classified as a protected area.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The Toucan Discovery Rule<\/strong> We work exclusively with certified local operators. <strong>Belize Tourism Board<\/strong> (BTB). Our guides are national, our lodges are Belizean, and our marine activities respect the protocols of <strong>Belize Audubon Society<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2>Five Belizean partners making a difference<\/h2>\n<h3>Belize Audubon Society (national)<\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>BAS<\/strong> manages 9 of the country's most important nature reserves, including the <strong>Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary<\/strong>, the <strong>Half Moon Caye National Monument<\/strong> and the <strong>Blue Hole Natural Monument<\/strong>. Each reservation entry (5-10 USD) directly funds conservation. By choosing to visit BAS reserves over unregulated alternatives, you fund the protection of the jaguar, manatee, and reef.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Toledo Ecotourism Association (South)<\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>TEA<\/strong> coordinate a network of <strong>Mayan community guesthouses<\/strong> in the Toledo District. Six Q\u2019eqchi\u2019 and Mopan villages offer homestays, traditional cuisine, and guided forest hikes. 30\u201350 USD per night, full board; 100 % goes to the families. This is the oldest community-based ecotourism project in Belize (1990).<\/p>\n<h3>3. Fragments of Hope (Placencia)<\/h3>\n<p>This NGO led by <strong>Lisa Carne<\/strong>, a marine biologist who has lived in Belize for 20 years, leads the country\u2019s largest coral restoration program. More than 80,000 coral fragments have been replanted on the reef since 2006. Volunteers (certified divers) can participate in replanting missions\u2014an extraordinary day at sea with a passionate team. $80\u2013120 USD per day, equipment included.<\/p>\n<h3>4. IXCACAO Maya Belizean Chocolate (Toledo)<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Juan and Abelina Cho<\/strong> founded this family-run business to demonstrate that Mayan cacao could be more valuable when processed locally than when exported in its raw form. They work with 30 farming families, pay 2\u20133 times the world market price, and train the next generation in bean-to-bar processing. The tour (35\u201350 USD) is a lesson in the circular economy.<\/p>\n<h3>5. Tide Tours (Punta Gorda)<\/h3>\n<p><strong>TIDE<\/strong> (Toledo Institute for Development and Environment) combines marine conservation and community development. Their &quot;catch-and-release&quot; sport fishing tours in the <strong>Port Honduras Marine Reserve<\/strong> fund anti-poaching patrols and scholarships for young people in Toledo. 200\u2013300 USD per day per boat (1\u20132 fishermen).<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2>Code of Conduct in the Marine Environment<\/h2>\n<p>The Belizean reef is fragile. Here are a few non-negotiable rules:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Never touch the coral<\/strong>. Even accidentally. Fins that aren&#x27;t controlled properly can cause irreversible damage.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Do not feed the fish<\/strong>. It disrupts the ecosystem and makes animals dependent.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reef-safe sunscreen only<\/strong>. Belize has not yet enacted legislation (unlike Hawaii), but our partners require it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Maintain a safe distance<\/strong> Regarding marine life: Maintain a minimum distance of 3 meters from turtles; do not touch stingrays or whale sharks.<\/li>\n<li><strong>No memories of coral<\/strong>. The export of coral, shells, and starfish is illegal.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr>\n<h2>Carbon offset<\/h2>\n<p>The Europe \u2192 Belize flight emits approximately 2-4 tons of CO\u2082 per person. Local initiatives:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Trees for the Future Program<\/strong> In Belize: Community reforestation in Cayo. 1 USD = 1 tree.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ya'axch\u00e9 Conservation Trust<\/strong> (Toledo): Protection of 400,000 acres of Maya forest. Membership $50\/year.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Belize Foundation for Research &amp; Environmental Education<\/strong> (BFREE): Research and conservation in the Maya Mountains.
