But there's another El Salvador, the one I show my clients when they tell me, \u00abSurprise me.\u00bb.<\/em><\/p>\n Joya de Cer\u00e9n<\/strong> is a Mayan village buried by a volcanic eruption around 600 AD. A UNESCO World Heritage site, it is the only place in the world that shows the daily life of ordinary Mayans\u2014not kings, not priests, but farmers. You can see the remains of houses, kitchens, gardens, and a temazcal (steam bath). The site is small, the visit lasts 45 minutes, and the emotion is immense. Entrance: $3 USD. 35 km from San Salvador.<\/p>\n The Jiquilisco Bay<\/strong> is the largest mangrove area in Central American Pacific. A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, it is home to sea turtles, caimans, and hundreds of bird species. It can be explored by kayak or lancha with community guides. The island of Holy Spirit<\/strong> Offers homestays ($15-25 full board). This is the wildest part of El Salvador, 2 hours from San Salvador.<\/p>\n The name says it all \u2013 mule drivers crossing these mountains said the pass was \u00abimpossible.\u00bb The El Imposible National Park<\/strong> is the largest forest reserve in El Salvador: 5,000 hectares of dry and humid tropical rainforest, 500 species of butterflies, 279 species of birds, pumas, and ocelots. Hikes of 2 to 8 hours with a mandatory guide. Entrance fee: 6 USD. Basic accommodation at the park or in Tacuba (20 min).<\/p>\n The Coatepeque Lake<\/strong> It's an intensely blue caldera lake, nestled in an ancient volcanic crater at 745 meters above sea level. Salvadorans call it \u00abla joya del Pac\u00edfico\u00bb (the jewel of the Pacific). On weekends, local families gather there. During the week, you're almost alone. A tour of the lake by lancha costs $20-30 USD. A few hotels and restaurants line the shore. No mass tourism \u2013 just a spectacular lake that nobody knows.<\/p>\n Tazumal<\/strong> is the largest archaeological site in El Salvador\u2014a 24-meter pyramid dating from 100 to 1200 AD. The site is small compared to Cop\u00e1n or Tikal, but it shows the influence of Mayan and Olmec civilizations in the region. 5 km away, White House<\/strong> is a more modest site with an indigo workshop where you can dye your own fabric. Both can be visited in half a day from the Ruta de las Flores. Entrance: $3 USD each.<\/p>\n Punta Roca<\/strong> La Libertad is one of the best point breaks in Central America\u2014a right-hand wave that rolls for 200 meters over a rocky bottom. It's a spot for experienced surfers. For intermediates, El Sunzal<\/strong> (15 min west) offers more accessible waves. El Salvador has hosted the ISA World Surfing Games and the local surf scene is one of the most dynamic on the continent. Lessons: $25-35 USD. Board rental: $10-15 USD\/day.<\/p>\n The village of Cinquera<\/strong> in the department of Caba\u00f1as is a place of remembrance of the civil war (1980-1992). The Museum of Memory and Hope<\/strong> Tell the story of the local resistance. The old guerrillas are sometimes guides.
