Mexico receives 40 million tourists a year. The question isn't whether tourism has an impact \u2014 it's choosing which impact.<\/em><\/p>\n Canc\u00fan is the symbol of what mass tourism does to a territory. In the 1970s, it was a fishing village on a barrier island. Today, it's a 25 km strip of concrete with 30,000 hotel rooms, a contaminated water table and receding coral reefs. The all-inclusive model created jobs \u2014 but also an enclave economy where tourist money circulates in a closed circuit.<\/p>\n The Riviera Maya is following the same path. The Tren Maya, inaugurated in 2024, opened new areas to development \u2014 with major environmental controversies over deforestation and habitat fragmentation.<\/p>\n Mexico isn't a hopeless case \u2014 it's a textbook case. Both models coexist: industrial tourism and community tourism. The traveler's choice determines which one grows.<\/p>\n Mexico is a global pioneer of community tourism<\/strong> \u2014 indigenous and rural communities that manage visitors themselves, from lodging to guiding.<\/p>\n The Pueblos Mancomunados<\/strong> (Sierra Norte, Oaxaca) are the reference. Eight Zapotec villages jointly manage a network of hiking trails, ecological cabins and local guides. The income funds schools, health centers and reforestation. The model has worked for 20 years \u2014 and the cloud forest is still standing.<\/p>\n Lacanj\u00e1 Chansayab<\/strong> (Chiapas): a Lacandon community at the entrance to the Montes Azules reserve. Lodging in wooden cabins, Lacandon guides for the jungle and the Bonampak ruins. Tourism has provided an economic alternative to slash-and-burn agriculture.<\/p>\n Ventanilla<\/strong> (Pacific coast, Oaxaca): a cooperative of fishermen turned naturalist guides. Lancha rides through the mangroves, crocodile and bird watching. The once-threatened mangroves are now protected because they're worth more alive than destroyed.<\/p>\n The mezcal boom is an economic blessing for Oaxaca \u2014 and an environmental challenge. Espad\u00edn agave (the most used variety) takes 7 to 10 years to mature. Wild varieties (tobal\u00e1, tepeztate, madrecuishe) take 15 to 25 years and aren't easily cultivated.<\/p>\n Global demand has exploded \u2014 exports have grown tenfold in ten years. The result: pressure on wild agave populations, deforestation to plant espad\u00edn, rising prices that squeeze out artisanal producers.<\/p>\n What the traveler can do<\/strong> : buy directly from the palenques<\/strong> (family artisanal distilleries) rather than industrial brands. Favor cultivated espad\u00edn over wild varieties. Ask whether the agave is farmed or harvested in the forest. An 8 EUR bottle of mezcal in Oaxaca is a fair price for an artisanal product \u2014 a 2 EUR mezcal probably hides cut corners.<\/p>\n The Yucat\u00e1n cenotes are windows onto the world's largest network of underground rivers \u2014 the Sac Actun system, 370 km of mapped galleries. They supply fresh water to the entire peninsula. And they're under threat.<\/p>\n Chemical sunscreen is problem number one. Oxybenzone and octinoxate contaminate the groundwater and destroy micro-organisms. Many cenotes now require a shower before swimming and ban non-biodegradable sunscreens.<\/p>\n Real-estate development around Tulum and Playa del Carmen makes things worse \u2014 insufficiently treated wastewater seeps into the underground network.<\/p>\n What the traveler can do<\/strong> : use only biodegradable sunscreen (no oxybenzone or octinoxate), respect each cenote's rules, favor community-run cenotes over commercial parks. And visit early in the morning \u2014 fewer people, better light, less impact.<\/p>\n Mexican cuisine is a living heritage \u2014 and eating local is the easiest and most enjoyable responsible act of the trip.<\/p>\n Markets over tourist restaurants.<\/strong> The Mercado 20 de Noviembre in Oaxaca, the Mercado Lucas de G\u00e1lvez in M\u00e9rida, the Mercado de la Merced in Mexico City \u2014 every peso spent goes directly to local producers and cooks.<\/p>\n Comedores and fondas.<\/strong> Small family restaurants (comedor, fonda) serve a comida corrida (daily menu) for 50-80 MXN (3-5 EUR): soup, main, drink, dessert. It's the food Mexicans actually eat \u2014 fresh, local, delicious. And the money stays in the neighborhood.<\/p>\n Artisanal tortiller\u00edas.<\/strong> Corn is the soul of Mexico \u2014 59 native corn races, versus a single industrial variety. Tortiller\u00edas working with native corn (hand-nixtamalized) deserve to be sought out and supported. The difference in taste is spectacular.<\/p>\n INAH (the National Institute of Anthropology and History) manages more than 190 archaeological sites open to the public. Entry fees (80-100 MXN for foreigners) fund conservation and research.<\/p>\n The problem: overcrowding at a few star sites (Chich\u00e9n Itz\u00e1: 2 million\/year, Teotihuac\u00e1n: 2.5 million\/year) while dozens of magnificent sites remain nearly empty.<\/p>\n The responsible alternative<\/strong> : visit Uxmal instead of Chich\u00e9n Itz\u00e1 (superior architecture, 10 times fewer people). Monte Alb\u00e1n instead of Teotihuac\u00e1n (a spectacular site, manageable crowds). Yaxchil\u00e1n instead of Palenque (reachable only by lancha, magical). Calakmul instead of Tikal (ok, it's in Mexico and not Guatemala, but the pyramid rises out of the canopy with zero tourists).<\/p>\n The bus rather than the plane<\/strong> when it's reasonable. Mexico City-Oaxaca by ADO bus (6h, 30 EUR) emits 5 times less CO2 than the flight (1h, 60 EUR). The Mexican bus network is excellent \u2014 air-conditioned, comfortable, punctual.<\/p>\n Colectivos<\/strong> rather than private taxis for short trips. In the Yucat\u00e1n and Chiapas, colectivos (shared vans) are the local transport \u2014 1-3 EUR, a dense network, a shared footprint.<\/p>\n Walking and cycling<\/strong> in the cities. M\u00e9rida, Oaxaca, San Crist\u00f3bal and central Mexico City are walkable.
