Belice lo entendi\u00f3 antes que sus vecinos. Es uno de los pa\u00edses de Centroam\u00e9rica donde el turismo responsable no es un eslogan de marketing \u2014 es una realidad medible.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2>El contexto: un pa\u00eds que vive de su naturaleza<\/h2>\n<p>El turismo representa alrededor del 40 % del PIB belice\u00f1o \u2014 la tasa m\u00e1s alta de Centroam\u00e9rica. La barrera de coral, la selva tropical y la biodiversidad marina son literalmente la econom\u00eda del pa\u00eds. Por eso Belice ha tomado decisiones radicales que pocos pa\u00edses se atreven a tomar:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>2018<\/strong> : moratoria total sobre la exploraci\u00f3n petrolera offshore. Belice es el primer pa\u00eds del mundo en haber prohibido la perforaci\u00f3n en el mar para proteger su arrecife.<\/li>\n<li><strong>2009<\/strong> : prohibici\u00f3n de la pesca de arrastre en todas las aguas belice\u00f1as.<\/li>\n<li><strong>36 %<\/strong> del territorio terrestre y marino clasificado como zona protegida.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>La regla Toucan Discovery<\/strong> : trabajamos exclusivamente con operadores locales certificados por el <strong>Belize Tourism Board<\/strong> (BTB). Nuestros gu\u00edas son nacionales, nuestros lodges son belice\u00f1os, y nuestras actividades marinas respetan los protocolos de la <strong>Belize Audubon Society<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2>Cinco socios belice\u00f1os que marcan la diferencia<\/h2>\n<h3>1. Belize Audubon Society (nacional)<\/h3>\n<p>El <strong>BAS<\/strong> gestiona 9 de las reservas naturales m\u00e1s importantes del pa\u00eds, entre ellas <strong>Santuario de Vida Silvestre Cockscomb Basin<\/strong>, le <strong>Half Moon Caye National Monument<\/strong> y el <strong>Blue Hole Natural Monument<\/strong>. Cada entrada a una reserva (5-10 USD) financia directamente la conservaci\u00f3n. Al elegir visitar las reservas de BAS en lugar de alternativas no reguladas, financias la protecci\u00f3n del jaguar, del manat\u00ed y del arrecife.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Toledo Ecotourism Association (sur)<\/h3>\n<p>El <strong>TEA<\/strong> coordina una red de <strong>guesthouses comunitarias mayas<\/strong> en el distrito de Toledo. Seis aldeas q&rsquo;eqchi&rsquo; y mop\u00e1n ofrecen alojamiento con los habitantes, cocina tradicional y caminatas guiadas por la selva. 30-50 USD por noche en pensi\u00f3n completa, 100 % destinado a las familias. Es el proyecto de ecoturismo comunitario m\u00e1s antiguo de Belice (1990).<\/p>\n<h3>3. Fragments of Hope (Placencia)<\/h3>\n<p>Esta ONG dirigida por <strong>Lisa Carne<\/strong>, bi\u00f3loga marina instalada en Belice desde hace 20 a\u00f1os, lleva el mayor programa de restauraci\u00f3n coralina del pa\u00eds. M\u00e1s de 80 000 fragmentos de coral replantados en la barrera desde 2006. Los voluntarios (buceadores certificados) pueden participar en las misiones de replantaci\u00f3n \u2014 una jornada extraordinaria en el mar con un equipo apasionado. 80-120 USD\/d\u00eda, material incluido.<\/p>\n<h3>4. IXCACAO Maya Belizean Chocolate (Toledo)<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Juan y Abelina Cho<\/strong> crearon esta empresa familiar para demostrar que el cacao maya pod\u00eda tener m\u00e1s valor transformado in situ que exportado en bruto. Trabajan con 30 familias productoras, pagan 2-3 veces el precio del mercado mundial y forman a la nueva generaci\u00f3n en la transformaci\u00f3n bean-to-bar. La visita (35-50 USD) es una lecci\u00f3n de econom\u00eda circular.<\/p>\n<h3>5. Tide Tours (Punta Gorda)<\/h3>\n<p><strong>TIDE<\/strong> (Toledo Institute for Development and Environment) combina conservaci\u00f3n marina y desarrollo comunitario. Sus tours de pesca deportiva \u00ab catch and release \u00bb en la <strong>Port Honduras Marine Reserve<\/strong> financian las patrullas contra la caza furtiva y las becas escolares para los j\u00f3venes de Toledo. 200-300 USD\/d\u00eda por barco (1-2 pescadores).<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2>C\u00f3digo de conducta en el medio marino<\/h2>\n<p>El arrecife belice\u00f1o es fr\u00e1gil. Algunas reglas no negociables:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Nunca tocar el coral<\/strong>. Ni siquiera accidentalmente. Las aletas mal controladas causan da\u00f1os irreversibles.<\/li>\n<li><strong>No alimentar a los peces<\/strong>. Perturba el ecosistema y vuelve dependientes a los animales.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Protector solar reef-safe \u00fanicamente<\/strong>. Belice a\u00fan no ha legislado (a diferencia de Haw\u00e1i), pero nuestros socios lo exigen.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Respetar las distancias<\/strong> con la fauna marina: 3 metros m\u00ednimo con las tortugas, ning\u00fan contacto con las rayas o los tiburones ballena.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nada de souvenirs de coral<\/strong>. La exportaci\u00f3n de coral, conchas y estrellas de mar es ilegal.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr>\n<h2>Compensaci\u00f3n de carbono<\/h2>\n<p>El vuelo Europa \u2192 Belice emite alrededor de 2-4 toneladas de CO\u2082 por persona. Iniciativas locales:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Programa Trees for the Future<\/strong> en Belice: reforestaci\u00f3n comunitaria en el Cayo. 1 USD = 1 \u00e1rbol.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ya&rsquo;axch\u00e9 Conservation Trust<\/strong> (Toledo): protecci\u00f3n de 400 000 acres de selva maya. Membres\u00eda 50 USD\/a\u00f1o.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Belize Foundation for Research &#038; Environmental Education<\/strong> (BFREE): investigaci\u00f3n y conservaci\u00f3n en las Maya Mountains.
