What to do in Nicaragua? The must-sees

📅 2 June 2026 ✍️ TRISTAN MARTIN ⏱ 7 min read

In short: What to do in Nicaragua? Stroll through Granada, the oldest colonial city in the Americas, admire the lava of Masaya volcano, hurtle down Cerro Negro volcano boarding, sail Lake Nicaragua to Ometepe island and its two volcanoes, swim in the Laguna de Apoyo, surf at San Juan del Sur, and laze on the Corn Islands. The “land of lakes and volcanoes” in concentrate.

Nicknamed the land of lakes and volcanoes, Nicaragua lines up a rare density of wonders on a small territory: colonial cities, active craters, volcanic islands, turquoise lagoons, and beaches on both oceans. Here are the must-sees of Nicaragua, the ones I truly recommend to my travelers, with a few field tips.

The Isletas of Granada, an archipelago of 365 islets on Lake Nicaragua.

1. Granada, the colonial pearl

Founded in 1524, Granada is the oldest colonial city in the Americas still on its original site. Its cobbled streets, ochre facades, and yellow cathedral by the lake make it the ideal starting point of a trip. From here you sail to the Isletas (365 islets), climb Mombacho volcano and its cloud forest, and explore out to the Pueblos Blancos. It's all in our Granada guide.

2. Masaya volcano, lava within sight

Some thirty minutes from Granada, Happy is one of the rare volcanoes in the world where you can drive to the crater rim and watch an incandescent lava lake. The night visit, when the red glow lights up the fumaroles, is unforgettable. Park entrance around US$10.

3. Cerro Negro and volcano boarding

Near León, Cerro Negro is Central America's youngest volcano, a mountain of black ash. You climb its slopes, board under your arm, before hurtling down the crater sitting on a wooden sled — a descent that can flirt with 80 km/h. One of the country's most exhilarating experiences.

4. León, the university city and its cathedral

Lion, Granada's historic rival, charms with its bohemian atmosphere and its UNESCO-listed cathedral — the largest in Central America, whose white rooftops you visit for a 360° view. Museums, revolutionary murals, and student life complete the picture.

5. Ometepe Island

Set in the middle of Lake Nicaragua (the largest in Central America), Ometepe is formed by two volcanoes, Concepción and Maderas, linked by an isthmus. You reach it by ferry (about 1 hour from San Jorge). Organic farms, natural springs, pre-Columbian petroglyphs, and hiking trails: a haven out of time.

6. The Laguna de Apoyo

Fifteen minutes from Granada, this crater lagoon with warm, transparent waters is perfect for swimming, kayaking, or paddleboarding. You easily spend a whole day there, in the shade of the wooded hills.

7. San Juan del Sur and the Pacific beaches

On the Pacific coast, San Juan del Sur is the capital of surf and laid-back vibes. Around it, dream beaches (Maderas, Marsella) and, between July and January, turtle nesting beaches at La Flor and Chacocente.

8. The Corn Islands, the secret Caribbean

To the east, in the Caribbean Sea, the Corn Islands unroll white sand, coconut palms, and turquoise waters. Little Corn, car-free, is a little paradise for snorkeling, diving, and total disconnection.

9. The Pueblos Blancos and their crafts

On the cool heights between Granada and Masaya, the Pueblos Blancos line up renowned artisan villages: pottery in San Juan de Oriente, hammocks, plants, and the flower market of Catarina, with its lookout plunging over the Laguna de Apoyo. A fine immersion in rural, creative Nicaragua, as a day trip from Granada.

10. The Río San Juan and Solentiname

For travelers seeking raw nature, the San Juan River, in the southeast, plunges into a wild region of forests and wildlife, all the way to the Indio Maíz reserve. The archipelago of Solentiname, on Lake Nicaragua, is famed for its naïve painters and its quiet. A still little-known end of the world, reserved for those with time.

Field advice

  • Base yourself in Granada to explore out (Masaya, Apoyo, Isletas, Pueblos Blancos, Mombacho) without changing hotels every night.
  • Keep córdobas for the markets, buses, and park entrances.
  • Alternate the rhythms : one city day, one volcano day, one lake or beach day.
  • Travel responsibly : favor local operators and respect the wildlife, in the spirit of our article traveling responsibly in Nicaragua.
