Mayan Civilization
Tikal, Yaxhá, Uaxactún, El Mirador (expedition)
From Temple IV in Tikal piercing the canopy at dawn to the three volcanoes watching over Lake Atitlán, from the markets of Chichicastenango where K'iche' can still be heard spoken, to the Holy Week processions that make colonial Antigua the most beautiful stage in Latin America — Guatemala is a permanent emotion.
Guatemala is not a Mayan country—it is the Maya pays. 40 to 50 % of its population is indigenous, a direct descendant of the builders of Tikal and El Mirador. The language spoken there is 22 living Mayan languages In addition to Spanish—K'iche', Kakchiquel, Mam, Q'eqchi', Tz'utujil, Ixil... In the highland markets, on the shores of Lake Atitlán, and in the high-altitude hamlets of Verapaz, you’ll come across women in huipiles hand-embroidered—each village has its own pattern, color palette, and distinctive textile style. The sacred calendar 260-day Tzolk'in rhythm the traditional festivals. The word "Huracan"— hurricane in French — comes directly from the Mayan god of wind and storms. This is the country that awaits you.
In the heart of the highlands sleeps Antigua Guatemala, registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979. Former colonial capital until the earthquake of 1773, it has retained its cobblestone streets, its Baroque ruins, its yellow arch at Santa Catalina, and the Water Volcano in the background — a perfect, almost unreal silhouette. During the Holy Week, Antigua covers itself with'carpets made of colored sawdust and flower petals, and hosts the most beautiful Catholic processions in Latin America. An hour away, the'Acatenango (3,976 m) offers one of the continent's most legendary treks—camping with a view of the Fuego Volcano, which erupts every twenty minutes, a sunrise over the altiplano, and on the same night as Star Wars Rebel Base filmed from Temple IV in Tikal in 1977.
Further north, in the Peten Department, the tropical jungle swallowed the great Classic Maya capital for a thousand years. Tikal — UNESCO 1979, it too — still emerges: six grand temples, 3,000 structures, a sea of trees as far as the eye can see, the cry of the Howler monkeys at dawn, and the shrill flights of Red aras at bedtime. Next to it, Yaxha (Survivor filming location), The Lookout shipping, Uaxactun, Aguateca. To the southwest, the Lake Atitlán — which Aldous Huxley called "the most beautiful lake in the world" — borders three volcanoes (Tolimán, Atitlán, San Pedro) and twelve Cakchiquel and Tz'utujil villages named after apostles (San Marcos, San Pedro, Santiago, Santa Cruz). And between the two worlds, the Turquoise natural pools of Semuc Champey, hanging over a limestone bridge above the Cahabón River, which plunges into the K'an Ba cave.
Let's be honest: Guatemala has long suffered from a complex safety reputation, a consequence of thirty-six years of internal conflict that ended in 1996, and targeted urban violence in Guatemala City. The reality of 2025 is very different. Since 2020, indicators have been improving without interruption, the tourism industry has become professionalized, and all the areas we operate in (Antigua, Atitlán, Tikal, Chichicastenango, Semuc Champey, Acatenango, Río Dulce) are safe and well-supervised. Our local partner agency in Guatemala City and Antigua knows every route, every driver, every certified guide — you travel to the right places, at the right times, with the right timing. Guatemala is in a rare window today still untouched by mass tourism, and already perfectly safe for those who know how to handle themselves. It's time to go.

The country can be visited year-round. Here are the nuances to know: the climate varies greatly depending on the Altiplano (1,500-2,500 m), the Petén (tropical jungle), or the Pacific coast.
Good to know: In Guatemala, the climate depends a lot on the'altitude. Antigua (1,530 m) and Atitlán (1,560 m) have a mild and dry climate, sometimes cool in the evening (bring a sweater). The Petén (Tikal) remains hot and tropical year-round (28-32°C). The Holy Week (the week before Easter) in Antigua is the country's premier cultural event—one to plan for several months in advance. Our local agency monitors the weather in real time and adjusts itineraries during the rainy season.

«Our guide woke us up at 3:30 a.m. so we could climb to the top of Temple IV before dawn. The jungle was still pitch black; we could hear howler monkeys in the distance, and then the sky began to lighten—suddenly, the other temples emerged from the canopy like islands in a green sea. My husband and I both cried. Toucan had taken care of every detail.»
«The trek is tough—6 hours of climbing, 1,500 meters of elevation gain, we're exhausted. And then we arrive at the camp, we sit in the cold, we wait. At 9 PM, the Fuego erupts for the first time—a deep rumble, a 200-meter-high orange spray, and the whole mountain shakes. One of the most powerful moments of my life. Toucan had chosen the right tour operator, the right camp, the right equipment.»
«We were debating between Costa Rica and Guatemala for our honeymoon – we ended up doing both. Guatemala left a different kind of impression on us. Lake Atitlán at sunset from San Marcos, the huipiles at the Sololá markets, and a Kaqchikel guide who taught us how to count in Mayan. More raw, more profound, more rare. We'd do it again in ten years.»
