Very small, immensely varied.

Welcome to the Smallest continental country in America — Only 21,040 km², barely larger than an average French department. It's called here "Tom Thumb of America", the Little Thumb. Make no mistake: between the Guatemalan border and the Gulf of Fonseca, you will find 23 volcanoes several assets (Santa Ana and its turquoise crater at 2,381 m, San Salvador El Boquerón, Izalco nicknamed "the lighthouse of the Pacific"), 300 km of Pacific coast surfing, colonial cities, a UNESCO World Heritage site unique in the world, and the memory of a civil war that ended in 1992. All this within a maximum of 1 or 2 hours' drive.

Its inhabitants are called "guanacos" (affectionate term originating in the 19th century), sometimes "little fleas." The cuisine revolves around pupusa — galette made of masa dough stuffed with cheese, beans, loroco, or chicharron, a national dish eaten morning and night, celebrated every second Sunday in November. In Olocuilta, pupusas shops line the road by the dozens. To drink: Salvadoran horchata made with morro seeds, Macuá cocktail at Flor de Caña, and increasingly more café baby SHB high-altitude grilled on-site in the Apaneca-Ilamatepec mountain range.

The country carries a heritage Maya Pipil + Lenca still alive — the language n a h u a t l survived Nahuizalco and Santo Domingo de Guzmán, the workshops of'indigo From Suchitoto, they are reviving a 2,300-year-old tradition (the Mayan "Blue Gold," exported massively to Europe in the 18th century), and the pyramids of Tazumal, Cihuatán and Joya de Cerén testify to a powerful Western civilization. Joya de Cerén, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1993, is the The only Maya peasant village ever found intact to the world — frozen under 6 meters of volcanic ash in the year 600, "Pompeii of the Americas.".

El Salvador has long suffered from its post-civil war and gang reputation. Since 2022, the country has transformed. Security indicators are among the best in Central America today, the South Pacific welcomes the ISA World Surfing Games, El Zonte has become the First Ever Bitcoin Beach, and tourism is getting back on track. It's time to go — before the crowds.

Travelers, some stories

★★★★★

Suchitoto, our favorite

«We hesitated to include El Salvador; we were afraid. Suchitoto blew us away—cobblestone streets, white facades, a huge lake at sunset from the viewpoint. The indigo workshop with Doña Irma: a timeless moment. Toucan arranged everything, a perfect French-speaking driver.»

Santa Ana Crater = Unreal Color

«4 hours of walking, and at the summit this turquoise crater that looks painted. We hiked up at 5 in the morning to avoid the clouds. Then Lago Coatepeque for lunch. A day I will never forget. The coffee at Lupita's finca afterward was the cherry on top.»

Sylvain (solo) January 2025
★★★★★

Surfing, pupusas, and zero stress

«I had in mind the El Salvador I’d seen in news reports from 10 years ago. Reality in 2025: the impeccable El Tunco surf school, deserted beaches on weekdays, pupusas for $1 at Doña Tere’s, and El Zonte’s digital-nomad vibe. We also took the time to visit Joya de Cerén—it was fascinating. We’d love to go back with the kids.»
