The sanctuary of the Salvadoran Pacific

The Jiquilisco Bay = the largest bay in El Salvador and the largest mangrove area in Central America. UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2007, a Ramsar site since 2005. 630 km² of channels, islets, mangroves, and estuaries fed by the Río Lempa and the Pacific Ocean. 4 species of sea turtles nest on the beaches (June-December): olive ridley, prieta (Pacific green), carey (hawksbill), baula (leatherback, the largest).

To the northwest, the Costa del Sol = a 15 km stretch of Pacific beaches 1h southeast of SAL. Volcanic black-sand beach, warm water, moderate waves (great for families), all-inclusive resorts and boutique hotels. Quieter than El Tunco and easier to reach. Travelers looking for a couple's or family swim spot prefer Costa del Sol. For nature lovers: Jiquilisco Bay with a boat tour through the mangroves, nighttime turtle watching, and birdwatching. Combining the two = 3-4 nights of sea + nature.

Our field tip: 3 nights is ideal — 1-2 days at Costa del Sol (beach, all-inclusive or boutique), 1-2 days in Jiquilisco (mangrove tour + turtles in season).   • ❌ Flash photos of turtles: disorients the turtles. Strictly forbidden. Phones too (screen light).
  • ❌ Costa del Sol for surfers: moderate waves, not ideal for surfing. Go for El Tunco/El Zonte instead (1h further west).
  • ❌ Without reef-safe sunscreen: a legal requirement in ES since 2023 to protect reefs/mangroves.
  • ❌ Walking on turtle eggs: marked trails, follow your guide. Nesting beaches = restricted areas at night.
  • ❌ Underestimating the currents: Pacific = strong currents. Lifeguards sometimes absent at Costa del Sol. Caution with children.
