Colonial cities
Granada, León, Masaya
Between yellow colonial cathedrals, permanently erupting volcanoes and a Creole Caribbean forgotten by the crowds, Nicaragua opens its doors to travelers seeking authenticity.
Dive into the heart of Central America's largest country (130,374 km²), still preserved from mass tourism. Colonial Granada (1524, the oldest continental city in the Americas), Ometepe the island of two volcanoes, Masaya where lava glows at night, Corn Islands the forgotten Creole Caribbean. 19 volcanoes including 7 active, the Lago Cocibolca (8,264 km²), Indio Maíz the 2nd largest rainforest in the Americas.
Its inhabitants are called 'pinoleros' — a national pride built around their cuisine (red gallo pinto, vigorón, nacatamal), their award-winning Flor de Caña rum, their national poet Rubén Darío, the Sandinista revolution, and Afro-Caribbean Garífuna culture. Authenticity isn't a marketing argument — it's the country's natural state.
