Big Corn = the main island (1 circular road of 25 km, shared taxis, scattered hotels, Picnic Center beach, Long Beach). Little Corn = an intact paradise, no cars, footpaths, deserted beaches (Otto Beach), a single fishermen's village, 30-min panga from Big Corn. The Corn Islands' snorkeling/diving rivals Belize: coral reefs, rays, nurse sharks, turtles, barracudas. Lobster for $10-15, coconut bread, johnny cakes, reggae at sunset.
Our field advice: 4-6 nights minimum (1 night on Big Corn to move around + 3-5 nights on Little Corn to disconnect). La Costeña flight from MGA (1h15, $185 round trip). Best combination: end a Pacific circuit (Granada-Ometepe-SJDS) with 5 Caribbean nights for the complete Nicaragua experience.

100% Caribbean cuisine: Rondon (fish + coconut milk + plantain + cassava + dumplings), coconut bread, johnny cakes, grilled lobster ($10-15 on Little Corn!), coconut grove crabs. Crab Soup Festival annually on August 27 (commemorating the emancipation from slavery) — 3 days of festivities, tastings, reggae. The rest of the year: Crab Soup Tradition every Saturday.
The Corn Islands breathe Afro-Caribbean culture : reggae, soca, calypso, dancehall. Reggae nights on the beaches, wooden bars, Nicaraguan Creole everywhere. Tropical Bar & Restaurant on Little Corn, Bistro on Big Corn. Learning a few Creole words = appreciated. Historic emancipation sites of the slaves, 1841 (Big Corn). La Costeña flight from Managua MGA, 1h15, ~$185 round trip. 2 flights/day, morning and afternoon. Small planes (~30 seats). 14 kg max baggage. Book 2-3 weeks ahead in high season. Weather cancellations possible.
Panga (fast lancha) from Big Corn to Little Corn: 2 departures/day, 10 am and 4:30 pm. $7-12 per passenger. Rough seas Nov-March (trade winds), hold the rail. A wet ride (bring a waterproof bag). No panga in storms.
1 night Big Corn + 4-5 nights Little Corn = the perfect combo. Less = no time to disconnect. More = for true slow travelers. If only 4 nights: 1 Big + 3 Little (but short).
Dolphin Dive on Little Corn = the reference PADI center. Dive Little Corn too. Discovery dive $90, certification course $300, 2-site fun dive $90. Top sites: Blowing Rock (nurse sharks), Sponge Bowl, City Hall.
ATMs only in Brig Bay (Big Corn). No ATM on Little Corn. Boutique hotels/restaurants take cards but local shops = cash only. Bring USD or córdobas before crossing. Traveler's checks refused.
Wifi available at Yemaya/Casa Iguana hotels but slow. On Big Corn: better coverage. Generators switched off at night in some hotels. Embrace unplugging. That's the charm of paradise.
Caribbean coast = humid, mosquitoes active especially morning/evening. DEET repellent recommended. Rainy season (June-Jan) more intense. Dengue/zika risk low but present. Accommodations have mosquito nets.
The La Costeña flight is sometimes canceled for bad weather. Always plan 1 buffer day on the way back before an international flight. NEVER schedule an international flight the same day you return from the Corn Islands.
