Dominican Republic Guide 2026

The Dominican Republic,
beyond the all-inclusive

Colonial Santo Domingo, whales of Samaná, larimar from Barahona, Pico Duarte 3,098m. Much more than resorts. This guide is written by those who live in Central America.

Explorer

Quisqueya, the cradle of the New World

Universal Taíno words: hurricane, hammock, canoe, tobacco. All born here, on the island of Hispaniola, shared with Haiti. The Dominican Republic is Santo Domingo, first European city in the New World, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also the Pico Duarte at 3,098m (highest point in the Caribbean), Samaná where 15,000 humpback whales migrate each winter, and the Larimar from Barahona – the world's only semi-precious turquoise gemstone, endemic to the island.

The country has suffered from the "all-inclusive Punta Cana" image. Yet, behind the resorts, there is an authentic Dominican Republic: Bayahibe and its island Saona, Las Terrenas and its deserted beaches, Constanza alpine, Bahía de las Águilas wild. And everywhere, merengue and bachata — UNESCO Intangible Heritage.

Why is this guide different? Toucan Discovery is a local tour operator. Every tip, every address, every itinerary comes from our firsthand experience. When we say "mid-January to mid-March for whales in Samaná," we observed it this year.

Santo Domingo Colonial Zone
Santo Domingo · Colonial Zone · UNESCO

The first
New World town

Founded in 1496 by Bartolomé Colón (Christopher's brother), Santo Domingo is the first European city established in the New World. Its Colonial Zone is packed with "firsts": the first cathedral (Catedral Primada, 1540), the first university (1538), the first fortress (Fortaleza Ozama, 1505). A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990. A plunge into 500 years of colonial history.

  • Primate Cathedral of America (1540)
  • Las Damas Street, oldest European street
  • Alcázar of Colón & Museum of Royal Houses
  • Nightlife & Bachata Plaza España
Local secret The Colonial Zone has become very touristy in the center. For a real atmosphere, go to the eastern edges of the zone (Calle Hostos): artisans, workshops, locals. And the Primada Cathedral early in the morning (before the groups) is magical. On Sunday evenings: free merengue in Plaza España.
Samaná whales
Samaná · Las Terrenas · El Limón

Whales
and deserted beaches

The Samaná Peninsula is the country's best-kept secret. Every winter (mid-January to mid-March), 15,000 humpback whales head to the bay to breed and give birth—one of the largest gatherings in the world. Beyond: Las Terrenas and its deserted beaches, El Limón and its tropical waterfall, Playa Rincón, regularly voted among the most beautiful beaches in the world.

  • Whale watching (Jan-Mar only)
  • Las Terrenas: Deserted beaches & lifestyle
  • Cascade El Limón by horseback or on foot
  • Playa Rincón: Top 10 Beaches Worldwide
Local secret For whales: CEBSE certified operators only (max 8 boats at a time). Las Terrenas remains authentic despite its growth — head to Playa Bonita or Playa Cosón for the truly wild experience. El Limón Waterfall: prefer hiking over horseback riding (animals are better treated).
Bayahibe Saona
Bayahibe · Saona Island · Cotubanama National Park

The alternative
authentic in Punta Cana

30 minutes from La Romana, Bayahibe remains a true fishing village. No resort walls. It's also the departure point for Saona Island, one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean (Cotubanamá National Park). World-class diving on the eastern reef, turtle snorkeling, and an intact Dominican atmosphere.

  • Saona Island Boat Excursion (Full Day)
  • St. George Wreck Dive, Catalina
  • Our Father: cenotes of the national park
  • Authentic village life, malecón
Local secret Choose Bayahibe over Punta Cana if you want to experience the Dominican Republic, not a resort bubble. For Saona: Casa Daniel or Bayahibe Divers operators (small groups). Avoid the 200-person catamaran tours. The Padre Nuestro cenotes are a well-kept secret: crystal clear water in the middle of the forest.
Cabarete kitesurfing
Cabarete · Puerto Plata · North Coast

Kitesurf
and Dominican amber

The north coast (Atlantic) is radically different: world-class kitesurfing in Cabarete, the historic city of Puerto Plata (a unique cable car in the Caribbean), green mountains in the background. And Dominican amber – a honey-colored plant fossil – is mined at Pico Duarte. Sosúa for diving, Cabarete for the winds.

  • Kitesurf & windsurf in Cabarete
  • Puerto Plata Cable Car (Mt. Isabel)
  • Amber Museum & Mines
  • 27 Charcos de Damajagua (jumping)
Local secret The 27 Charcos de Damajagua are perfect for adventurers: 27 natural waterfalls to jump, slide, and cross. Choose "full circuit" for a real adventure. Cabarete = windy May-August. For amber: museum in Puerto Plata + La Casa del Ámbar shop in Santo Domingo.
Jarabacoa Pico Duarte mountain
Constanza · Jarabacoa · Central Range

Switzerland
Caribbean

The center of the country is mountainous. Jarabacoa, at 600m, is called the "City of the Moon." Constanza at 1,200m is the "Magic Valley" – temperate climate (15-22°C), flowers, strawberries, European agriculture. Above that: Pico Duarte (3,098m), the highest point in the Caribbean. A 3-4 day trek is possible to climb to the summit and see both coasts.

  • Trek Pico Duarte (3-4 days, 3,098m)
  • Rafting on the Yaque del Norte River (Jarabacoa)
  • Constanza: strawberries, flowers, temperate climate
  • Jimenoa Waterfall & Baiguate Waterfall Cascades
Local secret The mountainous Dominican Republic is totally different from the coastal all-inclusives. Constanza is so cool that Dominicans go there to escape the heat. Pico Duarte is a REAL physical trek — choose Iguana Mama or Rancho Baiguate. And Jarabacoa rafting is some of the best in the Caribbean.
Bahía de las Águilas
Barahona · Bahía Águilas · Larimar

The Wild South
and larimar

The Southwest remains one of the last wild regions in the country. Bahía de las Águilas 8 km of deserted beach with no construction, accessible only by boat. Lake Enriquillo salt lake below sea level, endemic Hispaniolan crocodiles. And Barahona, the only place in the world where it's extracted Larimar turquoise gemstone.

  • Bahía de las Águilas (5-mile deserted beach)
  • Lake Enriquillo & crocodiles Hispaniola
  • Larimar Mines & Barahona Workshops
  • Sierra de Bahoruco National Park
Local secret Bahía de las Águilas: no buildings, no shade, no bar. Bring everything: water, lunch, a beach umbrella. It’s one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, BUT it’s more secluded than touristy. And larimar: buy it directly from the workshops in Barahona, not in the tourist shops (40–50% cheaper).

Tourism responsible

The Dominican Republic suffers from mass all-inclusives — Punta Cana is an extreme example: 22 km of concrete wall, privatized beaches, relegated local communities. Toucan Discovery chooses the opposite: authentic Bayahibe, charming Las Terrenas, wild Bahía Águilas. The real country beyond the all-inclusive.

🐋

Whale protection

CEBSE operators only in Samaná. Max 8 boats at a time. 50m distance respected. No touching.

House

Local communities

Family accommodations in Bayahibe, Las Terrenas. Guided excursions. Direct money to families.

🌿

Preserved national parks

Cotubanamá National Park, Jaragua National Park, Sierra de Bahoruco National Park. Official permits. Small groups. Respected trails.

💎

Ethical Larimar

Direct purchases from Barahona workshops. No intermediaries. Support for artisan-miner families.

Beyond all-inclusive

The Dominican Republic faces two realities: Punta Cana (where mass tourism has transformed the coastline) and the rest of the country (where the authentic DR survives). Our choice: to promote the latter.

Our commitment: Bayahibe instead of Punta Cana. Las Terrenas charm instead of Bávaro mass. Dominican family hospitality instead of international buffet. And always: direct support to communities.

  • Hotel excursions: €100-180
  • Hotel checkout = loss of package
  • You only see the private beach

Dominican food

Local eateries and restaurants: €5-10 per meal. "Gringo" restaurants: €20-35 for lower quality.

💚 May-June = sweet spot

Before the rains, after peak season: lower 30% prices, turtles laying eggs, winds for kitesurfing.

💚 Las Terrenas charm

Boutique hotels $70-150/night vs. $400 premium in Punta Cana. Playa Bonita beach free and beautiful.

💚 Larimar directly

Barahona Workshops: 40-50%—cheaper than tourist shops in Santo Domingo. And there's a story behind it.
