Guatemala 2026 guide

Guatemala,
heart of Mayan civilization

Colonial Antigua, Lake Atitlán surrounded by volcanoes, Tikal emerging from the jungle. This guide is written by those who travel Central America on a daily basis.

33 Volcanoes
21 Mayan languages
3 UNESCO sites
Explore

A country,
a thousand volcanoes & a thousand Mayans

Guatemala is the most densely populated country in the world in terms of living Mayan culture. 21 Mayan languages are still spoken, indigenous markets have remained unchanged for centuries, and Tikal - capital of the classical Mayan empire - whose pyramids still pierce the canopy of the Petén jungle.

But that would be reductive. Guatemala is also Antigua between three volcanoes, the Lake Atitlán which Aldous Huxley described as "the most beautiful lake in the world", the natural turquoise pools of Semuc Champey, and the Garífuna coast of Lívingston the Caribbean. All this in a country the size of Switzerland.

Why this guide is different Toucan Discovery is based in Central America. Every tip, every address, every itinerary comes from our field. When we say "the best time for the quetzal is March-June at the Biotopo del Quetzal", we've observed it this year.

Six faces,
only one Guatemala

Antigua Guatemala
Antigua Guatemala - UNESCO

The pearl
colonial

Former capital of the Kingdom of Guatemala, Antigua has been a UNESCO world heritage site since 1979. Its checkerboard cobbled streets are framed by three volcanoes (Agua, Fuego, Acatenango), its pastel facades conceal secret patios, and its ruined Baroque churches bear witness to the earthquakes of the 18th century.

  • Acatenango / Fuego trek with overnight at altitude
  • Craft market & Casa Santo Domingo
  • High-altitude coffee: Filadelfia, Finca Filadelfia
  • Semana Santa: sawdust in the streets
Secret de local Semana Santa (Easter) is unforgettable, but overbooked 6 months in advance. If you can't, choose Lent: every Sunday until Easter, mini-procession and sawdust carpet in Antigua. And the Filadelfia coffee is better than the tourist coffee on Calle del Arco.
Lake Atitlán Guatemala
Lago de Atitlán - Highlands

The lake
at the three volcanoes

The caldera of a collapsed volcano, Lake Atitlán stretches over 130 km² at an altitude of 1,560 m. Three volcanoes border it (Atitlán, Tolimán, San Pedro). A dozen Tz'utujil and Kaqchikel Maya villages surround it - each with its own traditional dress, crafts and rhythm.

  • San Juan La Laguna for authentic textiles
  • Santiago Atitlán and his Maximón cult
  • Indian Nose at sunrise (gentle trek)
  • Kayaking between villages in the early morning
Secret de local Avoid Panajachel (touristy) for sleeping - prefer San Marcos (yoga & alternative lifestyle), Santa Cruz (quiet & hiking trails) or San Juan La Laguna (authentic Mayan crafts). Lanchas are frequent but stop at 5-6pm - plan your crossings.
Tikal pyramid jungle
Tikal & Petén - UNESCO

The big one
Maya city

Tikal is the most important Mayan city ever discovered. Apogee around 700 AD, abandoned around 900, rediscovered in the 19th century. 16 km² of pyramids emerging from the Petén jungle. Temples IV and V tower over 60 m high - when you're on top, howler monkeys echo through the canopy at dawn.

  • Sunrise tour at Temple IV (360° jungle view)
  • Site guided tour 4-5h to understand
  • Fauna: howler monkeys, coatís, toucans
  • El Mirador (5-day trek, more pyramids)
Secret de local Lodge in Flores (colonial island on Lake Petén Itzá) rather than at the foot of the site. More charming, better value for money. The sunrise tour departs at 3:30 a.m. - just so you know. And the viewpoint at Temple IV at sunset is less crowded than the sunrise, and just as magical.
Mayan market Guatemala
Chichicastenango & K'iche' Highlands'

The market
Live Maya

Every Thursday and Sunday, Chichicastenango becomes the largest Mayan market in Central America. Colorful textiles, ritual masks, sculptures, fruit, chickens, medicinal herbs. On the steps of the Santo Tomás church, shamans burn copal - Catholic-Maya syncretism intact.

  • Chichi market (Thursday & Sunday mornings)
  • Santo Tomás Church: Mayan + Catholic rites
  • Colorful cemetery on the hill
  • Pascual Abaj: a Mayan altar in the heart of nature
Secret de local Arrive before 9am to see the Maya set up their stalls before the tourists. And negotiate respectfully: it's cultural, not aggressive. To buy authentic textiles without intermediaries: the women's cooperatives of San Antonio Aguas Calientes or San Juan La Laguna are better than Chichi.
Sémuc Champey natural pools
Sémuc Champey & Lanquín - Alta Verapaz

Swimming pools
natural turquoise

Sémuc Champey is a 300 m-long limestone bridge over the Río Cahabón. Above, pools of turquoise water cascade down. Below, the river disappears into a cave. One of Central America's little-known natural wonders.

  • Swimming in the turquoise pools
  • Trek El Mirador: a bird's-eye view of the site
  • Lanquín caves by pirogue
  • Tubing on the Río Cahabón
Secret de local Very rough access road from Antigua (8-10h by shuttle). Avoid motorcycles. Avoid the rainy season (Apr-Oct) if you can: muddy roads, pools sometimes brown instead of turquoise. Where to sleep: Greengo's or Utopia Eco Hotel - eco-lodges in the middle of the jungle.
Río Dulce gorge Guatemala
Río Dulce - Lívingston - Caribbean

Garífuna Coast
tropical

The Río Dulce is a river canyon leading to the Caribbean. At its mouth, Lívingston is a Garífuna town - an Afro-Caribbean people with unique roots. Reggae, coconuts, grilled fish, hammocks: this is the other Guatemala, totally different from the Mayan Highlands.

  • Río Dulce cruise (tropical gorge)
  • Lívingston, unique Garífuna culture
  • Siete Altares beaches (waterfall to sea)
  • Castillo San Felipe (colonial fort)
Secret de local Lívingston is only accessible by boat (1h from Río Dulce town). No cars in Lívingston - life slows down. Taste the tapado Garífuna soup, coconut milk, seafood, plantain. Avoid visiting during the rainy season (Oct-Jan): ferry sometimes cancelled.
Three routes

Your Guatemala
on measure

Essential Guatemala

📅 10 days / 9 nights 💰 1 800-2 400€

The great classic trio: colonial Antigua, Lake Atitlán and Mayan villages, Tikal in the jungle. The most balanced itinerary for a first discovery of the country.

Tikal pyramid
Arrival Antigua
Guatemala City → Antigua airport (1h)
International flight, direct transfer to Antigua (45 min). Installation in a colonial casa. First dinner in the courtyard of a traditional restaurant.
💡 Avoid sleeping in Guatemala City (medium security). Antigua is safer, more beautiful, only 45 min from the airport.
Cultural Antigua
Antigua day trip
Walking tour: Cathedral, Arco de Santa Catalina, Casa Santo Domingo (museum). Pepián lunch. Afternoon Filadelfia coffee finca (visit + tasting).
💡 Keep your shoes comfortable: the cobbled streets are impassable in heels.
Pacaya trek (optional) or relaxation
Antigua → Pacaya (1h30 round trip)
Active option: Pacaya volcano trek (3h, still active, marshmallows toasted on hot lava). Relaxation option: Antigua day, Mayan chocolate massage at ChocoMuseo.
💡 For trekking enthusiasts Acatenango with a night at altitude is AMAZING (Fuego erupts at night). But it's sporty: 2 days / 1 night, 5-7h climb.
Atitlán route via Chichi
Antigua → Chichicastenango → Atitlán (4h)
Early departure to arrive in Chichi before 10am (Thursday or Sunday ideal). Maya market 2h. Continue to Panajachel then lancha to your village (San Marcos or Santa Cruz).
💡 Check your day: Chichi is worth TRIPLE on Thursday or Sunday. Other days, it's dead.
Atitlán: Mayan villages
Village tour by lancha
San Juan La Laguna (textile cooperatives), San Pedro (animation), Santiago Atitlán (Maximón cult). Lancha between villages. Evening sunset from your hotel.
💡 Authentic textiles can be found in San Juan La Laguna, not Panajachel. Avoid resellers.
Indian Nose & Atitlán relaxation
San Juan / San Pedro
Sunrise from Indian Nose (departure 4:30 am, hike 1:30 am). View of the three volcanoes, lake in the mist. Return, breakfast. Afternoon kayaking or paddling on the lake.
💡 The Indian Nose tour is done with a local Maya guide (40-50 Q per person). Don't go alone, the trail is not obvious in the dark.
Flight to Petén
Atitlán → Guatemala City → Flores (1h flight)
Transfer to Guatemala City, domestic flight to Flores. Settle in Flores (charming colonial island). Afternoon stroll around the island, swimming in Lake Petén Itzá.
💡 Avoid the Guatemala-Flores night bus (12h drive). The flight costs 100-150€ but saves 12h of fatigue.
Tikal sunrise + complete website
Flores → Tikal (1h30)
Departure at 3:30 a.m. for the sunrise tour at Temple IV. Sunrise over the jungle, howler monkeys in the morning. Guided tour of the site (Templos I, II, III, IV, Mundo Perdido). Return to Flores late afternoon.
💡 Tikal in one day = intense. Count 8-10h on site. Stay hydrated, take a strong mosquito repellent, closed shoes (snakes possible).
Yaxhá or relaxation
Yaxhá option (1h)
Active option: less-frequented Maya site of Yaxhá, sunset on Yaxhá lagoon. Relaxation option: day in Flores, lake bathing, rest before returning.
💡 Yaxhá is the best-kept secret. Far less crowded than Tikal, and the sunset pyramid is unforgettable.
Back
Flores → Guatemala City → Europe
Morning flight to Guatemala City, then international flight. Farewell Guatemala.
💡 Avoid planning an international flight before 2pm from Guatemala City if you're leaving from Flores: safety margin essential.

💡 Xela is cold (1st coldest city in Guatemala). Sweatshirt and long pants.
Semuc Champey
Xela → Lanquín (8h shuttle)
Long route but spectacular scenery. D9 Sémuc Champey swimming, El Mirador trek, Lanquín caves.
💡 This road is AMAZING (8-10h, constant curves). Choose a good shuttle over a public bus. Compress it all into one day if possible.
Tikal & Flores
Lanquín → Flores (8h)
Long shuttle route to Flores. D11 Tikal sunrise + complete site.
💡 This logistics section is heavy. Consider a Coban-Flores flight if available (regional Avianca).
Río Dulce & Lívingston
Flores → Río Dulce (4h) → Lívingston (lancha 1h)
D12 road to Río Dulce. Tropical gorge cruise to Lívingston. D13 Lívingston Garífuna, Siete Altares beach, tapado dinner.
💡 Lívingston is another planet: Afro-Caribbean, reggae, slow life. Stay a minimum of 2 nights to get a good feel for the vibe.
Back
Lívingston → Guatemala City → Europe
Lancha return to Río Dulce, transfer to Guatemala City (6h), international flight.
💡 This logistics day is long: 12 hours. Save yourself an evening/night flight so you don't stress.

💚

Coffee direct from producers

Visits to fincas where producers really earn their coffee. No generic tourist circuit with no impact.

Respect for the sacred Maya

Mayan civilization is not dead. In Tikal, Semuc and the villages of Atitlán, ritual ceremonies still take place. If you see one, observe from a distance - don't photograph, don't participate without an invitation.

In Chichicastenango, the Santo Tomás church is a place of intense Catholic-Maya syncretism. Respectful entrance, no photos inside. Shamans still heal here with copal and eggs.

❌ The classic mistake

  • Hotel 5* Guatemala City: 200-300€/night/person
  • Generic tour operator excursions: €80-150
  • Last-minute domestic flight: €200
  • Gringo restaurants: €25-40 per meal
  • Total: €3,000-4,500 per person / 10 days

✅ Intelligent Guatemala

  • Casa coloniale Antigua: €50-90/night
  • Local Maya guides: €30-50/day
  • Reliable tourist shuttles: €15-30
  • Local restaurants: €8-15 per meal
  • Total: €1,500-2,200 per person / 10 days

💚 Book local casas

Booking or Airbnb: casa colonial Antigua 50-90€/night vs 250€ for a Hotel Camino Real. Identical in quality.

💚 Eat where the locals eat

"Comedor" and markets: 35-60 Q (4-7€) for a real meal. Tourist restaurants = 3x the price for lower quality.

💚 Interior flight ahead

TAG Airlines Flores 60-80€ return if booked 2 months in advance. Last minute = 200€.

💚 September-October = minimum price

Green season, few people. Hotels 30-40% cheaper. Cheaper flights. And the jungle is green (magical Tikal).

💚 Direct textile cooperatives

San Juan La Laguna or San Antonio Aguas Calientes: 200-400 Q for a museum-quality huipil. Chichi = 2-3x more expensive for uneven quality.

💚 Acatenango without intermediaries

The Acatenango 2d/1n trek costs 280-380 Q with a local Antigua agency. European agencies charge 200€+. Ditto for Tikal.
