Guide El Salvador 2026

El Salvador,
small country, great emotions

Central America's smallest continental country boasts 23 volcanoes, the best Pacific surfing, untouched Maya sites (UNESCO's Joya de Cerén), and a spectacular tourism resurgence. This guide is written by Central America residents.

A country in renaissance

For years, El Salvador has suffered from a bad reputation. Since 2022, the country has experienced a spectacular renaissance: renewed security, rapidly expanding tourist infrastructure, and already world-renowned surfing (ISA World Surfing Games 2021 and 2023). Now is the time to discover this country before it becomes mainstream.

Only 21,000 km², but an extraordinary density: Colonial Suchitoto on the shore of Lake Suchitlán, the Route of the Flowers which winds between coffee fincas and artisan villages, Joya de Cerén, the "Mayan Pompeii" preserved by the ashes of the Loma Caldera volcano, and the Pacific coast with world-class surfing.

Why is this guide different? Toucan Discovery is a local receptive. Every tip, every address, every itinerary comes from our experience on the ground. When we say "El Tunco for surfing, Suchitoto for the sunset," we observed it this year.

Six faces, one Salvador

Suchitoto Colonial
Suchitoto · Suchitlán Lake

The colonial soul
of El Salvador

Suchitoto is one of Central America's best-preserved colonial towns. Cobblestone streets, white facades, wrought-iron balconies. Overlooking Lake Suchitlán (the largest in the country), it possesses a unique romantic charm. It's the capital of indigo (añil), showcases ancestral Salvadoran crafts, and hosts the annual Floralia flower festival.

  • Central square & colonial cathedral
  • Indigo workshops with demonstration
  • Lake Suchitlán by boat, Bird Island
  • Permanent Festival of Art and Culture
Local secret Suchitoto is best experienced in the evening and early morning. Rent a colonial house rather than a hotel—better price and experience. The lake market on Sunday mornings is unparalleled: local fishermen, traditional dishes. Avoid Holy Week (Saturday-Sunday), it's overcrowded.
Flower Route Coffee
Flower Route · Juayúa · Apaneca · Ataco

Flower Road
& high-altitude café

36 km of road winding between coffee fincas, artisan villages, and wild flowers. Juayúa and its Gastronomic Festival every weekend (200+ stands of traditional dishes). Concepción de Ataco and its colorful murals. Apaneca and its highest point at 2,365m. The country seen from above, in color.

  • Juayúa Gastronomic Festival (Sat-Sun)
  • Visit coffee farms (Las Cruces, El Jabalí)
  • Ataco Murals & Artisan Workshops
  • Los Chorros de la Calera Waterfalls
Local secret The route is best traveled by car (the bus is slow). Juayúa and Ataco are each worth spending a night in. For the best coffee: Finca El Carmen (Concepción de Ataco) offers a tour and tasting for 12$ per person. And the Los Chorros de la Calera waterfall (Juayúa) is a hidden gem.
Surf El Salvador
El Tunco · La Libertad · Punta Roca

Surfing
world-class

Punta Roca is one of the best right-hand waves in the world, classified as surfing world heritage. El Tunco, a surf village 30 minutes from the capital, has become a global benchmark. Nightlife, hostels, international surfers. But there are also real deserted beaches further away (El Cuco, Las Flores to the south).

  • Surfing at Punta Roca (intermediate+ level)
  • El Tunco, world surfer vibe
  • Hidden Beaches: Mizata, El Cuco
  • Surf school for beginners
Local secret El Tunco has become a tourist hotspot. For a truly local experience, head further out: Mizata, El Cuco, Las Flores. And for world-class surfing, Punta Roca requires skill—the locals rule the spot. Beginners: K59 or El Tunco.
Santa Ana Volcano, El Salvador
Santa Ana · Izalco · Cerro Verde

Volcanoes
accessible

El Salvador is home to 23 volcanoes. Santa Ana (2,381 m) is the country’s highest, reachable via an easy 4-hour hike. At the summit lies a spectacular turquoise-green crater. Nearby, Izalco (1,950 m), nicknamed "the Lighthouse of the Pacific" for its historic eruptions, has been dormant since 1966. All of this is located within Los Volcanes National Park.

  • Santa Ana Volcano Hike (4-hour round trip)
  • View of Izalco from Cerro Verde
  • Lake Coatepeque (turquoise caldera)
  • Santa Teresa Hot Springs
Local secret The Santa Ana trek is done as a supervised group (departure at 11:00 a.m. sharp from the Cerro Verde parking lot). 1$ for park admission, 3$ for a mandatory guide—that’s it. Bring water, a hat, and closed-toe shoes. And after the trek: go for a swim in Lake Coatepeque and enjoy the lakeside restaurants.
Joya de Cerén Maya site
Joya de Cerén · Tazumal · San Andrés

The "Mayan Pompeii""
UNESCO

Joya de Cerén is unique in the world. Around 600 A.D., the Loma Caldera volcano buried an entire Maya village under ash. As a result, daily Maya life has been preserved intact, unlike at the major monumental sites. It is the ONLY UNESCO-designated Maya site in El Salvador. Nearby, Tazumal (Chalchuapa) and San Andrés further enrich the region’s archaeological heritage.

  • Joya de Cerén: Intact Mayan Houses
  • Tazumal: Pyramid of Chalchuapa
  • San Andrés: Regional Maya Capital
  • Museum of Anthropology (San Salvador)
Local secret Joya de Cerén is small (1 hour to visit) but conceptually unique. Combine it with Tazumal and San Andrés (30 minutes between the two) for a full day. And the Museum of Anthropology in San Salvador is a must before visiting – it provides the necessary historical context.
Jiquilisco Bay Mangroves
Jiquilisco Bay · Barra de Santiago · Mangroves

Mangroves
& sea turtles

Jiquilisco Bay is the largest bay in Central America and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Vast mangrove forests, deserted islands, and beaches where thousands of olive ridley sea turtles come to lay their eggs each year (arribada). Barra de Santiago, further west, is also home to sea turtle conservation programs.

  • Exploring the mangroves by kayak or silent canoe
  • Turtle Bridge (June-December)
  • Baby sea turtle release
  • The Deserted Beach of Barra de Santiago
Local secret The arribada (mass nesting) occurs mainly between September and November. Choose a certified tour operator (FUNDARRECIFE)—small groups, proper distance maintained, a moving experience. Avoid uncertified tours, which can disturb the turtles.
