A small country, a immensity wild

Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America. Nestled between two oceans, it boasts active volcanoes, freshwater lakes, island paradises, pristine forests, and endless beaches. Nowhere else will you find such diversity in such a small space.

What makes this country unique is its authenticity. The winding roads, the small colorful villages, the farmers on horseback, the smoking hot springs—everything is still real. This is Central America before mass tourism. Authentic. Preserved. Waiting to be discovered.

Why is this guide different? Toucan Discovery is not a Parisian publisher. We are a local receptive operator based in Central America. Every tip, every address, every itinerary comes from our daily experience on the ground. When we say «the best time to see turtles is July,» we observed it this year.

Five worlds, on a small island

Aerial views of the Isletas and Mombacho Volcano
Granada · Masaya · Laguna de Apoyo

The door
colonial entrance

Granada is Nicaragua's first true city. Its colorful facades, its horse-drawn carriages, and the sound of bells recall Spain from 500 years ago—frozen in time, beautiful, and a little forgotten.

  • Kayaking in the Isletas at sunrise
  • Swimming in Laguna de Apoyo
  • Nighttime ascent of Masaya Volcano
  • Masaya Artisan Market
Local secret Head to Masaya Volcano in the late afternoon to see the glowing lava after the sun goes down. It's magical. And at the Masaya market, prices are 30% cheaper after 2 p.m. when the vendors close their shutters.
Volcán Telica from the sky
León · Cerro Negro · Las Peñitas

The adventure
volcanic

León is Nicaragua's bohemian capital. It has a university, street performers, hidden galleries, and explosive street art. And just 45 minutes away is Cerro Negro—a black volcano where you can snowboard down its slopes. It's unique.

  • Volcano boarding on Cerro Negro
  • Cathedral UNESCO with rooftop view
  • Las Peñitas Beach and Surfing
  • Street art in Sutiava
Local secret The best time for volcano boarding is just before the rainy season (April–May), when the sand is nice and dry. And in Las Peñitas, the sunset over the Pacific is 10 times better from the Médusa bar during happy hour—drinks for $1.
Ometepe Island with its two volcanoes
Ometepe Island

The Island of
two volcanoes

Surrounded by Lake Nicaragua, this hourglass-shaped island transports you to 1980. Dirt paths, farmers on horseback, artisanal cacao farms. Two volcanoes stand on either side. Pure magic.

  • Ojo de Agua - pure underground water basin
  • Trek Concepción Volcano
  • Organic cocoa farm visit
  • Black sand beaches
Local secret The ferry is cheaper from Rivas than from San Juan del Sur. And staying in San Juan del Sur allows you to explore Ometepe on a day trip without overpaying for isolated small lodges. The best cocoa farm? Finca la Piedad — Julio welcomes you like a friend.
Poneloya Beach, Pacific Coast
San Juan del Sur · Tola · Popoyo

The Pacific
wild

Small coastal villages where tourists are rare but the energy of the waves surf high. It's here, in season, that Olive Ridley turtles emerge from the water by the thousands. World-class surfing, mythical turtles, pristine jungle.

  • Surf at Popoyo or Hermosa Beach
  • Arrival of Olive Ridley turtles
  • Chococente Wildlife Reserve
  • Peñas Blancas Border Crossing to Costa Rica
Local secret The best season for turtles is July-September. But in August it's also green and humid—May-June is golden hour. Go to Chacocente at night with a local guide, the baby turtles will race towards the ocean. Unforgettable.
Volcanic crater in León
Matagalpa · Somoto · Estelí

Nicaragua
secret

The northern highlands are the Nicaragua that tourists overlook. Coffee plantations cover the mountains. Somoto Canyon is a closely guarded secret—spectacular hiking with a natural waterslide.

  • Somoto Canyon — trekking + swimming
  • Jinotega Coffee Farms
  • Black Forest lodge and nature
  • Cigar factory in Estelí
Local secret Somoto is a 2½-hour drive from León, but it’s worth every minute. Go with a local guide from the village, not a tour agency. And what about the coffee from Jinotega, at an altitude of 1,800 meters? It’s the best coffee in the world. The farms sell whole bags for $15.

Your adventure on measure

Essential Nicaragua

📅 8 days / 7 nights Car 800-1500€

A tour of Nicaragua's three major faces: colonial Granada, volcanic León, and the Pacific beaches. This itinerary captures the essence of the country without exhausting you. Perfect for a first visit.

Granada Cathedral at sunset
Arrival in Managua
Managua to Granada (45 min)
International flight to Managua. Pick up rental car or private transfer. Drive to Granada on the Pan-American Highway. Settle into Granada, first glass of Flor de Caña while admiring the colonial facades.

Colonial Granada
Granada
Old town walking tour. Visit Granada Cathedral (16th century). Kayaking in the Isletas (27 small islands on the lake). Coffee on the terrace at sunset. Dinner at Marlin Pickwick (best restaurant).
The Isletas are really best at sunrise (6 am). Otherwise, go in the late afternoon.

Departure 6 AM. 1h30 hike up Cerro Negro (728m). Descent by volcano boarding on a wooden board (adrenaline!). Swim in the hot springs of San Jacinto. Return to León for dinner.
Bring plenty of water and sunscreen. The black sand absorbs a lot of heat.

The beach may have waves — safer swimming in the afternoon.
León to San Juan del Sur
León → San Juan del Sur (3h45)

What the guides
Don't you disent pass

  • 🤫 The best restaurant recommendations are outside the tourist center. Ask the locals.
  • 🤫 Haggle everywhere except restaurants. A smile + a friendly attitude = a 20–30% discount.
  • 🤫 Roads at night: to be avoided. Nicaraguans drive without headlights. Travel only during the day.
  • 🤫 Safety: Very safe for tourists. Tourist area = zero problems. But no flashy jewelry.
  • 🤫 People are VERY kind. A sincere "buenas" = doors opening.
  • 🤫 Tap water is NOT drinkable — drink bottled or filtered water. Good hotels have free refilling stations, bring a water bottle.

Nicaragua Natural Landscape
Realistic budget

Nicaragua is inexpensive

Restaurant
$2-4
Dining hall meal
🍺
$1-2
Local beer (Toña)
$1.00
Essence / liter
🚗
$35-55
SUV ride
🛏️
$40-90
3-star hotel per night
🎯
$15-50
Activity (guide + entry)

❌ Classic error

  • Tourist hotel chain ($120+/night)
  • Travel agency ($70+ per activity)
  • "Tourist" restaurant ($25+)
  • Don't negotiate the deal
  • Pay in dollars instead of córdobas
  • Total: $200–300/day

✅ Expert advice

  • Authentic local hotel ($40–60/night)
  • Direct Local Guides ($30-40)
  • Eating Where Nicaraguans Eat ($4-8)
  • Haggle almost anywhere (except restaurants)
  • Córdobas at the ATM: +30% purchasing power
  • Total: $80-120/day

💚 Green Season = Low Prices

May through October: 20-40% is cheaper. Hotels offer discounts. Fewer tourists. Greener and rainier, but magical.

💚 Always eat local

A meal at a comedor (budget restaurant): $2-4. The same "tourist" restaurant across the street: $15. It's the same dish!

💚 Córdoba > Dollar

One dollar = 35 córdobas nominally. But locals give "1 dollar" for 30 NIO. Withdraw córdobas at the ATM.
