Guide Panama 2026

Panama,
two oceans and thousand worlds

From the legendary Canal to the deserted islands of San Blas, from the skyscrapers of Panama City to the cloud forests of Boquete. This guide is written by those who live in Central America.

A small country, some different worlds

Panama is unique. Within a few hours, you switch from skyscrapers to dugout canoes, from primary jungle to an international financial center. The Canal connects two oceans, two economic worlds, two histories.

It is the crossroads of Central America. The Kuna, an indigenous people, rule the San Blas archipelago. The Ngäbe-Buglé control the mountains of Boquete. The rest of the country is that amazing mix that only Panama can offer: modern yet still wild, expensive but less so than Switzerland, touristy yet authentic.

Why is this guide different? Toucan Discovery is not a Parisian publisher. We are a local receptive agency based in Central America. Every tip, every address, every itinerary comes from our daily experience on the ground. When we say «the best time is September for whales,» we observed it this year.

Six worlds to explore

Panama City Casco Viejo
Panama City · Casco Viejo

The city
who never sleeps

Panama City is the capital of Central America. Casco Viejo, the colonial quarter, contrasts dramatically with the skyscrapers of Punta Pacifica. Nightlife, global restaurants, boutiques – it's Miami, Latin American version.

  • Old Casco on foot, colonial architecture
  • Interoceanic Canal Museum
  • Cosmopolitan nightlife and restaurants
  • Panama Bay by speedboat
Local secret Casco Viejo is touristy but remains charming in the late afternoon when the tourists leave. Go to the Mercado del Marisco after 5 PM — fresh seafood at local prices. And to sleep without crowds: hotels outside of Casco offer better value for money.
Panama Canal
Panama Canal · Gatun

The masterpiece
between two oceans

The Canal is one of the seven wonders of the modern world. Building a passage between two oceans in 1913 was considered impossible. The experience of passing through the Canal, or simply observing it, is surreal.

  • Partial crossing of the canal by boat
  • Interoceanic Canal Museum
  • Gatun Locks on standby
  • Rainforest Discovery Center near the Canal
Local secret The best time to observe the Canal without crowds is early in the morning around 6:30 AM when the container ships are still passing through the fog. And the Rainforest Discovery Center is a hidden gem—more biodiversity than any lodge.
Bocas del Toro
Bocas del Toro

The archipelago
to the crystal-clear waters

Bocas del Toro is an archipelago of ten major islands with white sand beaches and turquoise waters. It's Panama's premier diving and snorkeling spot. The atmosphere is Caribbean — relaxed, colorful, truly authentic.

  • Snorkeling and diving on the reefs
  • Bastimento Island and its caves
  • Isla Colón for village life
  • Beach hopping by private boat
Local secret Bocas is perfect in September-October when the tourists have left—cheaper, less hot, wonderful. The best snorkeling spots are only visited by 2-3 local operators. And staying in Bocas Town rather than Carenero allows you to eat local without overpaying.
San Blas Guna Yala
Guna Yala · San Blas

The last
Untouched paradise

San Blas is the archipelago of the Kuna, an indigenous people who have preserved their autonomy, culture, and islands. 365 islands, only a few of which are inhabited. Crystal clear waters, no electricity on some islands, transportation by canoe.

  • Island hopping among the Kuna Islands
  • Unparalleled snorkeling and diving
  • Meeting the Kuna women and their handicrafts
  • Regenerative tourism experience
Local secret San Blas is autonomous—tourism revenue goes to the Kuna. Respect the rules: no photos without permission, no nude swimming. And the best time to go is the dry season (January-March). A 30-minute flight from Panama City—Air Panama.
Boquete, Chiriquí
Boquete · Chiriquí · Volcán Barú

The mountain
fresh

At an altitude of 1,200m, Boquete is Panama's mountain. Subtropical climate, coffee plantations, cloud forests. This is where people escape the heat of Panama City to find true mountain peace.

  • Trek Volcán Barú — summit at 3,474m
  • Premium coffee farm tours
  • Footpaths in the clouds
  • Boquete Village, quiet life
Local secret The Volcan Baru trek is really worth it – a view of two oceans from the summit in clear conditions. Leave at 2 AM. Boquete coffee is among the best in the world. Organic farms have homestays at local prices.
Rey Islands, Gulf of Panama
Pearl Islands · Gulf of Panama

The archipelago
wild

The Pearl Islands are less known than San Blas but just as spectacular. Small deserted islands, surreal snorkeling, Robinson Crusoe experience. This is the Panama that nobody visits.

  • Saboga Island and its indigenous village
  • Breathtaking snorkeling and diving
  • Desert island camping
  • Whale watching (July-September)
Local secret The Pearl Islands are only accessible by boat. September to October is humpback whale season—spectacular. And staying on a private island with a local guide costs less than a week in Panama City, for an incomparable experience.
Three routes

Your adventure on measure

Essential Panama

📅 8 days / 7 nights Cars, 1000-1500€

Morning at the Interoceanic Canal Museum to understand history. Noon at the Mercado del Marisco for seafood. Afternoon walking tour of Casco Viejo: church, plazas, galleries. Sunset over the bay.
💡 Hire a local guide for Casco Viejo — the stories behind the buildings are worth the price of the guide.
Panama Canal & Gatun
Panama City → Gatun (1 hour)
Excursion to the Gatun Locks to see ships pass. Option: partial transit of the Canal by boat for an unforgettable experience. Visit to the Rainforest Discovery Center to see intact biodiversity.
The partial transit of the Canal costs €200-300 per person, but it's an experience not to be missed. Book the day before.
Flight to Bocas del Toro

Explorations in Bocas del Toro
Bocas · Lagoon Islands
Day 6: Reef diving – spectacular experience. Free afternoon for rest or a walk in Colón. Day 7: Cave snorkeling in Bastimento or simply relax before departure.
Life here is really relaxed—embrace the Caribbean pace. Restaurants offer a mix of Panamanian and international cuisine.
Return to Panama City
Bocas → Panama City (1h flight) → Airport
Return flight to Panama City. Direct transfer to the airport or a few hours of shopping at Multiplaza before the international flight.
Plan for wait times—connections can be complicated. And prices in Bocas are higher than the rest of Panama.

Tourism responsible

Toucan Discovery isn't just a tour operator – it's a partner with local communities. Every trip supports the local economy, respects nature, and preserves culture.

House

Local communities

All our partners are local. The revenue stays in the villages. Guides, lodges, operators: families who live here.

🌿

Pristine nature

We prohibit single-use plastics. Limited group sizes. Environmentally certified guides. Partners with local reserves.

🎓

Cultural education

Immersion with the Kuna, not a show. Visit organic farms, not mass tourism. Respect traditions. Guides who truly explain.

💚

Positive impact

10% of the revenue goes to local reserves. Support for guide families. School-village programs. Tree planting on every trip.

Authentic San Blas

San Blas is managed by the Kuna people. Our tour guides strictly adhere to their rules. No "voyeuristic" tours: you’re really there to meet people, not to watch them. The women decide whether they want to sell their molas.

When you pay for San Blas, the money goes directly to the community. That's why it's more expensive than Bocas — but it's fair.
