Belize Guide 2026

Belize,
reef & jungle

From the Blue Hole to Maya Lamanai, from turquoise Cayes to jaguar jungles. The least populated country in Central America — and arguably the most singular. This guide is written by people who live in Central America.

400k Inhabitants
300+ Km of reef
600+ Cayes & islands
Explorer

A country, four cultures

Belize is the only country in Central America with English as its official language — a British legacy. But listen closely and you'll hear Creole, Spanish, Garífuna, and more than 10 Maya languages. That unique blend is what gives the country its charm.

Only 400,000 inhabitants. But offshore: the second largest coral reef in the world, the legendary Blue Hole, and hundreds of cayes. Inland: the dense jungle of Cayo, Maya sites hidden under the canopy (Caracol, Xunantunich), and one of Central America's last wild jaguar populations.

Why is this guide different? Toucan Discovery is a local DMC in Central America. Every tip, every address, every itinerary comes from our ground experience. When we say 'March-June for the whale sharks at Gladden Spit', we observed it this year.

Six faces, one Belize

Belize Cayes
Ambergris Caye · Caye Caulker · Blue Hole

The reef
& the Blue Hole

The Belize Barrier Reef is the second largest coral reef in the world, a UNESCO site. At its heart, the legendary Blue Hole — a perfectly circular underwater sinkhole 300m across and 124m deep. World-class diving. Above it, Ambergris Caye (San Pedro) and Caye Caulker make the perfect base: laid-back island life, 'Go Slow' as the local motto says.

  • Diving the Blue Hole (PADI Advanced required)
  • Snorkeling Hol Chan Marine Reserve
  • Caye Caulker: the Split, paddleboarding, Creole life
  • Shark Ray Alley: swimming with nurse sharks
Local secret Caye Caulker is more authentic and affordable than Ambergris. No cars (golf carts), 'Go Slow' everywhere. For the Blue Hole, plan a full dive day (3 dives, 6h at sea) — pick a certified operator. Hol Chan snorkeling is enough for 90% of travelers.
Cayo District jungle
Cayo District · San Ignacio

The jungle
& the Maya

Cayo is inland Belize. San Ignacio, the district capital, is the perfect base for exploring Xunantunich (Maya city), Cahal Pech, and further out Caracol — Belize's largest Maya city. The dense jungle shelters howler monkeys, toucans, and the rare ATM ceremonial cave (Actun Tunichil Muknal), where Maya crystals remain intact.

  • ATM Cave: a swim-and-crawl crossing
  • Xunantunich: climbing El Castillo
  • Caracol: Belize's largest Maya city
  • Mountain Pine Ridge & Big Rock Falls
Local secret The ATM Cave is the most singular experience in the country — swimming through an underground river, crossing chambers lined with intact Maya pottery and skeletons. No photos allowed since 2012 (a phone fell on a skull). Book with a certified guide (Pacz Tours or MayaWalk).
Belize beach
Placencia · Hopkins · Garífuna Coast

Beaches
& Garífuna culture

The Placencia peninsula offers 26 km of Caribbean-fringed beaches. The village is still a Creole fishing village. Hopkins, further north, is the heart of Garífuna culture — a unique Afro-Caribbean people in the Americas. Punta music, African drums, hudut in coconut milk. Another dimension of Belize.

  • Deserted beaches of Placencia & Maya Beach
  • Garífuna drumming in Hopkins (Lebeha workshop)
  • Cockscomb Basin excursion (jaguars)
  • Diving and snorkeling the southern cayes
Local secret Hopkins remains more authentic than Placencia (which is gentrifying fast). Stay 2-3 nights in Hopkins: drum lessons, Garífuna dance, traditional hudut. November 19 = Garífuna Settlement Day, a national celebration with dancing on the beach. Magical.
Lamanai Belize Maya
Lamanai · Orange Walk · Crooked Tree

Maya in the jungle
& wildlife

Lamanai is one of the longest-occupied Maya sites (3,000+ years). You reach it by boat along the New River — howler monkeys, crocodiles, birds. The High Temple towers over the lagoon. Further east, the Crooked Tree reserve gathers thousands of migratory birds and jabirus (giant storks).

  • Lamanai by boat (wildlife + High Temple)
  • Orange Walk & Belizean sugar
  • Crooked Tree: 300+ bird species
  • Cuello: a rarely visited Maya site
Local secret Lamanai is truly worth the effort. The New River boat trip is unforgettable: crocodiles, birds, landscapes. Leave early (8 am from Orange Walk) for the best wildlife. Skip the combined tour from Belize City — too long and tiring.
Jaguar jungle Belize
Cockscomb · Mountain Pine Ridge · Jungle

Kingdom
of the jaguar

Belize has one of the highest jaguar densities in the Americas. The Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary is the world's first reserve dedicated to the jaguar. Seeing one is rare. The trails offer ocelots, tapirs, spider monkeys, and the beauty of pristine jungle.

  • Cockscomb: trekking & river tubing
  • Victoria Peak (1,124m summit)
  • Mountain Pine Ridge: Río Frío Cave
  • Big Rock Falls & natural pools
Local secret The jaguar remains elusive (a 1% chance of a sighting). But the experience of pristine jungle in a secluded lodge is worth it on its own. Black Rock Lodge or Chaa Creek for a premium experience. Cockscomb as your gateway to the jungle. And do the Río Frío Cave: a huge cave with a river running through it.
Toledo Maya village Belize
Toledo District · Punta Gorda · Q'eqchi' Maya

Belize
deep & secret

The southern district, Toledo, is Belize at its most rural and least visited. Q'eqchi' and Mopan Maya villages in the hills, dense jungle, hidden waterfalls (Río Blanco), and the Maya sites of Nim Li Punit and Lubaantun. This is the Belize that hasn't changed in 50 years.

  • Q'eqchi' Maya villages (homestays possible)
  • Río Blanco waterfalls & Tiger Cave
  • Lubaantun & Nim Li Punit Maya sites
  • Punta Gorda: an end-of-the-world feel
Local secret Toledo is for travelers who REALLY want to get away. Very little infrastructure. But a Maya homestay (TEA — Toledo Ecotourism Association) is unique in the Americas: a night with a local family, shared meals, true immersion. Allow 2 days to get there from Belize City.

The country has banned spearfishing, restricted commercial diving at the Blue Hole, and made reef-safe sunscreen mandatory. The Garífuna communities (Hopkins, Dangriga, Punta Gorda) and Maya communities (Cayo, Toledo) are weathering rapid change. Favor homestays and local cooperatives.
