30 km from León, the Cerro Negro (728 m) is the youngest volcano in the Americas (appeared in 1850). León was the intellectual fiefdom of the Sandinista revolution (1979). The streets are covered in mural paintings Homage to Sandino, to the heroes, to the poets. Rubén Darío (1867-1916) = father of Hispanic modernism, continental idol, absolute national pride. His childhood home in León is a intimate museum with original manuscripts, letters, furniture, garden. 5 minutes away, the Ortiz Gurdián Gallery is home to the finest art collection in Central America (Picasso, Miró, Latin American painters). 30 min from León, Las Peñitas = Pacific surfer beach, black volcanic sand, regular waves. Waterfront boutique hotels (Suyapa Beach Hotel). Next door, the Isla Juan Venado Reserve (22 km of mangroves) is home to caimans, migratory birds, and sea turtles (nesting season: July–December). 2-hour boat tour: $15 per person.
