More substantial than Peruvian ceviche: raw fish or shrimp + lime + onion + tomato + cilantro + grilled corn. Served with fried tortillas. SJDS ceviche = top freshness. El Timón or Mercado.
Shrimp in garlic sauce
~$15 — dish
Shrimp flambéed in garlic and butter, with white rice and plantains. Pacific coast specialty. Plump local shrimp. Bambú Beach Club or Las 5 Hermanas.
Sunday Funday
~$30 — event
Legendary pool crawl (every Sunday) that brings together international backpackers across hotels with pools: Pelican Eyes, Casa Oro, Naked Tiger... DJs, Flor de Caña, swimming. Very popular with 18-30 year olds, not very authentic but a unique atmosphere.
Coastal Vigorón
~$3 — snack
Coastal variation of Nicaraguan vigorón: yuca + curtido + chicharrón or fried fish, served on a banana leaf. At the Municipal Market or beach stands. Perfect surf snack.
Macuá & Toña

Airplane
ACCESS

LIR Costa Rica plus simple

Liberia LIR (Costa Rica) 2 hours from San Juan del Sur via Peñas Blancas = faster and more convenient than Managua (MGA) from Europe (direct LIR US flights). Border 30 min CR side + 30 min NIC side. Our DMC organizes.

🌅
Sunset

Christ at 5 PM

Sunset at Cristo de la Misericordia = a must-see experience. Be there at 5 p.m. for 30–45 minutes of golden light. Take a motorbike taxi ($5 round trip) or hike for 1 hour from the village. Enjoy a drink afterward at the Big Wave Dave’s beach bar.

🥳
Sunday Funday

🛂
Border

Peñas Blancas 1h30

The Costa Rica-Nicaragua border is 1.5 hours from SJDS. Processing time: 30 minutes on the Costa Rican side + 30 minutes on the Nicaraguan side. Fees: $13 for exiting Costa Rica + $13 for entering Nicaragua. Our DMC offers private door-to-door transfers from Liberia to SJDS.

⚠️ Avoid — classic pitfalls

  • To stop over for 1 night SJDS requires at least 3 nights to enjoy the pace and surrounding beaches.
  • Miss the sunset Christ Classic mistake. It's the postcard image of the trip.
  • Town beach only: SJDS = quiet but not very spectacular swimming. Go to Maderas, Hermosa, Marsella.
  • Walking alone at night: Safe town in general, but deserted beaches at night. Taxi recommended after 10 PM.
  • Underestimating the sun: 350 days/year of sun. Reef-safe sunscreen (recommended), hat, hydration.
  • Drinking tap water: Non-potable. Bottled water only.
