The mountains of coffee and mist

Matagalpa & Jinotega — the "Highlands" of Nicaragua, at 1,200-1,600 m altitude, in the mountainous north-center of the country. A cool temperate climate (15-25°C, permanent mist), cloud forests, coffee plantations as far as the eye can see. 80% of Nicaragua's coffee production comes out of these mountains — specialty arabica coffee (Caturra, Maracaturra, Geisha varieties) recognized worldwide and awarded at the Cup of Excellence.

A singular history: a wave of German immigrants in 1891, drawn by coffee (Selva Negra Mountain Resort = their legacy). An indigenous Matagalpa, Sumo and Miskito population in some remote villages. The Sandinista guerrillas of the 1960s-70s found refuge in these mountains (Carlos Fonseca, founder of the FSLN, was from Matagalpa). Immersive coffee tours (harvest Oct-March), hikes Cerro Apante (1,442 m), Cerro El Picacho, nature reserves Tisey-Estanzuela, potters' villages El Sauce.
