The coast of world-class surf

La Libertad — port and capital of the Surfcity El Salvador, just 35 km south of the capital. El Salvador's Pacific coast is home to some of the best surf spots in the world. Punta Roca (facing the Muelle de La Libertad) = an 800 m long right-hand wave, world-class, host of the ISA World Surfing Games 2021. El Tunco, 8 km west, = iconic surf village with its dozens of boutique hotels, beach restaurants, international vibe.

11 km further, El Zonte = historic village: world's first "Bitcoin Beach" since 2019 (before Bitcoin's national adoption as legal tender in 2021). Beaches of black volcanic sand, consistent waves year-round, hot tropical climate (28-32°C). Punta La Libertad and its Muelle (fishermen's pier) with the Plaza de los Pescadores = fresh ceviche at $5 from the fishermen themselves. Sunday Funday pool crawl tradition. Relaxed atmosphere, young international travelers.

Our field tip: 3-4 nights ideal — 1 day surf lesson in El Tunco, 1 day El Zonte Bitcoin + nearby beaches, 1 day La Libertad muelle + advanced surf lesson at Punta Roca, 1 day of pure relaxation. Best combination: Ruta de las Flores (2h) or Suchitoto (2h via SAL) → La Libertad to finish on the Pacific. Or at the start, from SAL airport (35 km).

⚠️ Avoid — classic pitfalls

  • Punta Roca as a beginner: an advanced-only wave. If you're a beginner → El Tunco or El Zonte.
  • Non-reef-safe sunscreen banned by law (2023). Buy reef-safe before departure or locally.
  • Trying to see it all in 1 night: 14 km of coast = at least 3 nights needed to live it.
  • Walking alone at night in La Libertad town: Uber recommended after 10pm. El Tunco/El Zonte = beaches OK in the evening.
  • Underestimating the currents: strong waves, currents. Don't swim far out unaccompanied, lifeguards sometimes absent.
  • Drinking tap water: Non-potable. Bottled water only.
