About Xela

Capital of the Altiplano, heart K'iche' and roof of Central America

Officially Quetzaltenango — but everyone says «Xela» to pronounce chela), abbreviation of Xelaju, the historical K'iche' name for the city. Second largest city in Guatemala165,000 inhabitants, 200,000 in the metropolitan area), Xela is the cultural capital of the K'iche' Maya civilization and the main hub of the western highlands.

À 2,330 m altitude, the climate is temperate, bracing, sometimes glacial at night (5-10°C). All around, a circle of active volcanoes: Santa María (3,772 m) dominating the city, Santiaguito — one of the youngest active volcanoes in Central America, emerged in 1922 from the crater opened by the great eruption of Santa María in 1902 — and further on the Tajumulco (4,220 m), the highest point in all of Central America.

Our on-site tip: Xela deserves 2 to 3 nights to soak in its university atmosphere, walk between Parque Central and Pasaje Enríquez, and combine Almolonga + Fuentes Georginas + a volcanic trek depending on your energy levels. Build your Altiplano leg on Toucan Dynamics.

1 Central Park of Quetzaltenango with the cathedral and Pasaje Enríquez
🏛️ Neoclassical Center

Central Park & Enríquez Passage

The monumental heart of Xela: Central America Park lined with late 19th-century neoclassical buildings (Casa de la Cultura, Banco de Occidente, Cathedral of the Holy Spirit), and the mythical Enríquez Passage — former grand luxury hotel transformed into a gallery of bars and restaurants, including the legendary Salón Tecún.

🤫 Secret Pro : Aperitif at Salón Tecún under the arches around 6 p.m. — micheladas, local student crowd, unique ambiance in Guatemala.
💡 Tip: Municipal Theater (5 min walk) morning guided tour: early 1900s Italianate gem, marimba programming, and concerts.
2 Volcán Tajumulco, Central America's highest point, seen from Xela
Volcanoes of Central America

Ascent of Tajumulco (4,220 m)

The The high point of all Central America. 2-day / 1-night trek from Xela: ascent to camp at 3,800m, bivouac under the Milky Way, summit ascent before dawn for sunrise with views of Mexico, the Pacific Ocean, and the Guatemalan volcanic chain. Physically demanding but accessible to regular hikers.

3 Volcan Santiaguito erupting from the summit of Santa María
🌋 Geological spectacle

Santa Maria Trek & Santiaguito View

The rise of Santa María Volcano (3,772 m) during the day from Xela offers one of the rarest panoramic views in the world over the Santiaguito Volcano — appeared in 1922 in the crater opened by the cataclysmic eruption of Santa María in 1902, with quasi-permanent Strombolian activity every 30-60 min. Seeing a volcano awaken 1,000 m below your feet is unforgettable.

🤫 Secret Pro : Departure at 4 a.m. to reach the summit at dawn — Santiaguito often awakens at sunrise, luminous plumes guaranteed.
💡 Tip: 1,200 m of positive elevation gain over a 6-hour round trip — good physical condition required, not extreme altitude compared to Tajumulco.

Volcanic hot springs

Fuentes Georginas — Hot Springs in the Cloud Forest

45 minutes from Xela, perched at 2,600 m in the cloud forest from Zunil Volcano, the Fuentes Georginas Alignment of 4 pools of mineral thermal water (38-42°C) in the heart of lichen-fern-orchid vegetation. The perfect antithesis to a cool day on the altiplano. Rustic bungalows for sleeping.

🤫 Secret Pro : Go there in the late afternoon around 4 PM, when the groups leave — pools almost empty at sunset in the mist.
👑 VIP Option: Night in a bungalow + typical meal on site = timeless experience, stars in the steam, very affordable price.

Corn K'iche' Colors'

Almolonga + San Andrés Xecul

Almolonga K'iche' village known for its spectacularly fertile volcanic soil—extraordinary radishes and carrots, up to 4-5 vegetable growing cycles per year, colorful vegetable market on Wednesdays and Saturdays. San Andrés Xecul Kaleidoscopic Maya-Baroque church, bright yellow facade studded with saints, angels, and animal figures in relief—a very rare syncretic marriage of Catholicism and Mayan cosmovision in Guatemala.

🤫 Secret Pro : Almolonga market days = Wednesday and Saturday mornings—the most impressive. Bring water; there are few foreign tourists.
💡 Tip: climb to the viewpoint behind the church of San Andrés Xecul (10 min walk) for a breathtaking high-plain view.

⚠️ Avoid — classic pitfalls

  • Do Xela in 1 day: A minimum of 2-3 nights to enjoy the city, the thermal baths, and at least one volcanic excursion.
  • Tajumulco without acclimatization: 4,220 m is high, plan for an acclimatization night in Xela first.
  • Underestimating the cold: Shorts and a shirt for bed = big mistake, fleece is a must.
  • Drinking tap water: Free filtered water in hotels, reusable water bottle.
  • Photo of the Maya without permission: Always ask, especially in Almolonga and in rural markets.
  • Choose the cheapest trek agency Cold equipment, possible accidents — Quetzaltrekkers or Adrenalina Tours are the benchmark.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your questions, our answers

Why does everyone say "Xela" instead of Quetzaltenango?
Xela to pronounce chela) is the abbreviation for Xelaju, the historical K'iche' name for the city before the arrival of the Spanish. Quetzaltenango is the official Spanish name («place of quetzals»), but in practice, local usage and Mayan pride mean everyone—residents, students, regular travelers—says Xela. It's shorter, more accurate, more local.
How many nights to plan for in Xela?
2 to 3 nights minimum to enter the city and take at least one excursion (Almolonga + Fuentes Georginas, for example). 4-5 nights if you add a volcanic trek (Santa María or Tajumulco). For a Spanish immersion at a school, budget 1 to 2 weeks.
Is Xela suitable for families?
Yes for families with children aged 8-10 years and above. The city is safe, the altitude is well tolerated, and Fuentes Georginas and Almolonga are relaxed excursions. Volcano treks are reserved for sporty teenagers. For very young children, the nighttime cold can be uncomfortable.
What budget should I plan for?

How to get to Xela from Antigua or Atitlán?
From Antigua : Recommended private shuttle, 4–4.5-hour drive ($120–180 USD one way per vehicle), or shared shuttle ($25 USD, 4.5 hours). From Atitlán (Panajachel): 2.5-hour drive; shared shuttle: $20 USD; private shuttle: $90–120 USD. The transfer can be easily arranged through Dynamics.
Can one learn Spanish in Xela?
It's even one of the city's world specialties. 10 to 15 Spanish schools recognized, including PLQ, Celas Maya, ICA, Madre Tierra. Classic format: 20 hours of individual lessons per week + host family (room+3 meals/day) ≈ €200/week. Ideal for 1-4 weeks of total immersion.
