About Antigua

Royal capital, colonial jewel, baroque case from Guatemala

Founded in 1543 as Santiago de los Caballeros de Guatemala, For two centuries, Antigua was the capital of the Spanish colonial kingdom for all of Central America. The devastating earthquake of 1773 forced the capital to be moved to the current Guatemala City — and froze Antigua in its baroque setting, listed UNESCO in 1979.

Today, it's a city-museum on a human scale: cobblestone streets, pastel facades, ruined convents overgrown with bougainvillea, and a circle of three volcanoes that watch over every sunset. Water dormant, Fire in permanent eruption, Acatenango majestic at 3,976 m.

Our on-site advice: stay a minimum of 3 nights. Antigua is best explored on foot, over coffee, and at dusk on a rooftop facing the spitting Fuego. Plan your stay at your own pace in Toucan Dynamics.

Photo

Saint Catherine's Arch at 6:45 AM

Before 7 AM, deserted street, sun in the axis on the arc and Agua volcano. After 9 AM, 30-minute queues, harsh light, cars blocking the frame.

👟
Equipment

Closed-toe shoes required

Antigua's rough cobblestones twist ankles. High heels are impossible. Comfortable sneakers or low boots, thick soles.

💧
Altitude

Hydration at 1530 m

Moderate altitude but marked dryness. Drink 2L/day to avoid mild altitude sickness. Tap water is not potable; filtered water is available free of charge at the hotel.

🌋
Trek

Acatenango: Choosing a reputable agency

The price difference is justified: low-cost agencies = poor-quality tents, sleeping bags that aren't warm enough, and accidents. Tropicana and Wicho & Charlie's are the gold standard. Expect to pay ~$120 per person.

💸
Budget

Local cafeterias = 70% cheaper

Tourist restaurants on 5th Avenue: $20–30 per meal. Eateries at the Municipal Market or Rincón Típico: tamales, soups, and roast chicken for $4–6. Top quality.

🎭
Holy Week

Book 6 to 9 months in advance

All hotels are fully booked. Prices are x2-x3. If you want to experience it, plan from September for the following year. Or choose Tuesday-Thursday (smaller crowds).

🛂
Formalities

No EU visa < 90 days

Passport valid for 6 months after return. No paid entry card. GUA airport often has a 45-minute wait at immigration: allow 3 hours buffer for transfers.

🚗
Transportation

No car in Antigua

Pedestrian-only or partially pedestrianized area; no parking available. We recommend a private transfer from GUA to Antigua ($35 one way), followed by walking everywhere. Uber is a good option for day trips.

⚠️ Avoid — classic pitfalls

  • Visiting in 1 day from Guatemala City: 2-3 nights minimum to grasp the soul of Antigua.
  • High heels or flip-flops: Ruthless cobblestones, sprain guaranteed.
  • Acatenango unprepared: 1500 m elevation gain, cold -5°C at night, serious agency essential.
  • Walking alone after 10 PM outside the city center: Safe center, less so the periphery. Favor taxi/Uber.
  • Exclude Semana Santa from the dates: If you don't like crowds, avoid April.
  • Drinking tap water: Free filtered water everywhere, reusable water bottle.
