Day by day

The itinerary in detail

A driver will meet you at the airport in Cancun, whatever your arrival time, and takes you to Playa del Carmen. Charming hotel near the beach and Fifth Avenue, evening at leisure — the epic begins tomorrow morning, at breakfast, with your guide.

Jet lag is best conquered with your feet in the sand: add nights in the Riviera Maya before you leave (see «Extend the Adventure»).

The journey begins with Tulum, the fortress city perched above the Caribbean, then plunges into the jungle of Cobá, whose Nohoch Mul pyramid overlooks an ocean of greenery—the climb is earned, the view is savored. The evening stop: Valladolid, with its pastel facades and its Zací cenote resembling a secret cave. Typical lunch en route, overnight in a charming hotel.

Guided tour of Chichen Itza as the shadows of El Castillo still stretch, have lunch in the village of Pisté, then stop at Izamal, the «magical village» dressed all in yellow, including the convent. The road ends at the foot of Uxmal: your hotel is just a few meters from the entrance to the site.

The Puuc style is discovered early: the oval pyramid of the Soothsayer, the 24 rooms of the Governor's Palace, the masks of the god Chac running along the friezes. Then head west towards the lowlands of Chiapas – about a six-hour drive, lunch in Campeche, arrival in Palenque in the evening.

River border expedition: navigate the Usumacinta River to Yaxchilán, a magnificent city half reclaimed by the jungle, then onward to Bonampak, whose 8th-century frescoes tell of Maya court rituals and battles with astonishing realism. Depart before dawn, return to Palenque at nightfall – an unforgettable day.

Your specialist guide reveals Palenque Upon waking in the jungle, before hitting the mountain road: a swimming break in the turquoise pools of Agua Azul, lunch by the waterfalls, then arrival in San Cristóbal de las Casas, your base for two nights. Dinner is on your own in the town center, which is packed with good restaurants.

Morning walk in the streets of San Cristobal, among colonial arcades, pink tiled roofs, and Indian markets, then visit the church of San Juan Chamula, where Mayan worship surfaces beneath Christian rites—a unique place in the world. In the evening, warm cinnamon punch on the zócalo, facing the illuminated cathedral.

Long scenic drive (approx. 7.5 hours) and border crossing: Mexico fades away, Guatemala begins – vehicle change at the border, your guide stays with you and takes care of everything. At Chichicastenango, the excitement is already building: tomorrow is market day. Charming inn in the heart of the quiche town.

Morning in the whirlwind of the market Chichicastenango embroidered textiles, dance masks, incense and flowers, up to the Santo Tomás church with its astonishing Mayan-Christian syncretism. In the afternoon, the road descends towards Panajachel and the Lake Atitlán, which many consider one of the most beautiful lake landscapes in the world. Typical dinner near the inn.

Early departure for Tikal Temples and pyramids above the canopy, mist parting, howler monkeys as background noise—one of the most intense moments of the trip. The site is immense; the visit takes the whole day. Late afternoon by the pool in Flores.

Day of travel to Copán Ruinas (approximately 7.5 hours, plus border formalities), punctuated by stops along the Río Dulce and in Zacapa. Arrival in the afternoon in the charming Honduran village: cobblestone streets, small square, free time – your guide will suggest places for dinner.

Chiseled stelae, zoomorphic altars, Hieroglyphic Staircase carved with the longest known Maya text: Copán Wrap up the Maya chapter of the epic in style. In the afternoon, return to Guatemala City (approx. 4-hour drive) and spend the night in a charming hotel in the historic center.

Flight from Guatemala City to Managua (included), then transfer to Granada, one of the oldest colonial cities on the continent, set on the edge of Lake Nicaragua. Check into a charming hotel in the heart of the historic center, with the rest of the day free to explore under the arcades.

Gentle cruise in silent electric motorboats through the Isletas archipelago, born from an eruption of the Mombacho volcano: herons, monkeys, and floating gardens, lunch served on an island. In the afternoon, a guided tour of Granada — 16th-century cathedral, shady squares, lively market — before a free evening in the historic city.

Full day of exploration of'Ometepe Charco Verde Reserve and its howler monkey families, the petroglyphs left by pre-Columbian peoples, the lagoon's mangrove, and the Mirador del Diablo viewpoint, suspended between volcano and lake. Route to the capital via the legendary Carretera Panamericana, stopping at scenic overlooks along the way and having lunch by the Corobicí River, where motmots, herons, and toucans frequent the riverine forest. Arrive at San Jose and installation in a 4-star hotel certified for sustainable tourism, in the city center.

The next day, an early departure with your guide on the trail of the resplendent quetzal – you are in one of its last remaining realms. Two days of cloud forest, hummingbirds, and home-style cooking served by the fireside.
