The jewel Mayan art

Copán — nicknamed "The Paris of the Maya world" by archaeologists for the exceptional finesse of his sculptures. Former prosperous Mayan city In the 9th century, capital of a southeastern border kingdom. Registered UNESCO in 1980. Discovered in the modern sense by John Lloyd Stephens and Frederick Catherwood in 1839 (Stephens bought it for 50 dollars to a local farmer).

Specificity Copán is not the most monumental (Tikal, Calakmul plus imposing) but the most artistically refined. Carved high-relief stelae (the most beautiful in the Maya world), Hieroglyphic Stairs (2,200 glyphs, longest known Maya text), Rosalila Temple rebuilt as a replica at the museum, Acropolis with fascinating archaeological digs. Dynasty of 16 sovereigns (from Yax K'uk' Mo', founder, 426 AD to Yax Pasaj, last ruler). The town Copán Ruins = Colonial village 1 km from the site, charming, perfect base. 14 km away: Guatemala border (El Florido) — Classic Tikal-Copán combo.

Our on-site recommendation: ideal 2 nights — 1 day archaeological Copán (site + museum + tunnels), 1 day Macaw Mountain (refuge ara) + Hot Springs (Hot springs). Queen combination: Guatemala (Antigua/Tikal) → Copán (3-4h border) → San Pedro Sula → Bay Islands (Roatán/Utila). Or: El Salvador → Copán via Santa Ana (3h El Poy border).

  • Visiting a site without a guide Classic mistake. Stones without context. $20 is well worth the expense.
  • High noon on site: Intense heat (80°F+), no shade on the plaza. Morning mandatory.
  • Missing Sculpture Museum The real stelae are inside (the ones in situ are replicas). Templo Rosalila = wow.
  • Driving at night Route CA-11 winding, little lighting, animals. Drive during the day.
  • Drinking tap water: Non-potable. Bottled water only.
