About Cancun

More than a beach, a front door on the Yucatán

Cancún is not just its Hotel Zone and all-inclusives. Behind the 22 km of white powder sand and the mythical turquoise waters, the entire Yucatán Peninsula opens up within a 2-hour drive: Mayan pyramids, sacred cenotes, artisan markets, the ecological island of Holbox, and whale sharks.

The destination accumulates the'accessibility from Mexico's second-largest airport, the security from a mature tourist zone, and the promise of landscapes that haunt the collective imagination. This is often where a successful Mexican journey begins—or ends.

Our field advice: use Cancun as a base camp, then radiate out. The real Yucatan reveals itself in movement.

  • Renting an SUV: Completely useless. All roads are paved.
  • Buying at the auction on the beach: Prix X3 vs. Mercado 28.
  • Book Chichen Itza for noon: Heat, crowd, harsh light for the photo.
  • Eating only at the all-inclusive: Authentic Yucatecan cuisine can be found in El Centro.
  • Feeding marine animals: prohibited and dangerous to their ecosystem.
  • Drinking in public: Drinking alcohol in public is punishable by a fine.
