About Isla Holbox

The island of resistance to time

200 km north of Cancún, separated from the mainland by the Yalahau lagoon, Holbox is a sandy tongue of 42 km long and 2 km wide. No cars on the island - electric carts, bicycles and horses. It is here, in the Yum Balam Biosphere Reserve, that the whale sharks gather in record numbers every summer.

No shopping malls, no hotel chains, no concrete. Just painted shacks, boutique hotels at the gateway to the sand, street art frescoes on every corner, and mythical sunsets on the western tip. Resistance to over-tourism in Yucatán.

Our advice: 3 nights minimum to really get the hang of it. And plan ahead for access - you need to take a ferry from Chiquilá (25 min, $14 return, last departure 9.30pm).

🦈 Exceptional encounter

🤫 Secret Pro : departure compulsory at 6 a.m. - calm sea, sharks on the surface, maximum visibility, back before the heat.
👑 VIP option: private boat with French-speaking biologist (4-6 pers max), $190/pers, professional photos included.
2 Boat trip around Isla Holbox
🏝️ Sandbank

Punta Mosquito & the sandbar

At the eastern end of the island, a sandbar stretches for 1 km at low tide. Crystal-clear water at mid-calf, starfish and brown pelicans. The postcard photo of Holbox.

💡 Tip: only available to low tide. Check the tide times before you leave (app Tides Near Me).
🤫 Secret Pro : 30 min walk from the pueblo, or 10 min by cart. Go at 7 a.m. to be alone in the world.
3 Colorful street art in Isla Holbox
🎨 Pueblo & street art

The pueblo & its frescoes

3 sandy calles in the heart of the village, dozens of murals (International Public Art Festival every year), beach restaurants and terrace bars. Barefoot in the sand, mojito in hand - that's Holbox's signature.

💡 Tip: rent a bike ($8/day) to visit the frescoes scattered outside the center.
🤫 Secret Pro : dinner at Edelyn = THE local restaurant for lobster pizza, pizzeria since 1990.
4 Flamingos in Yum Balam lagoon
🦩 UNESCO reserve

A must-have 3-in-1 outing: Bird Island (Pájaros) with its colonies of flamingos and frigate birds, Yalahau cenote (natural freshwater, mangroves), Pasión Island (lunch with your feet in the water).

Sunsets & bioluminescence

Punta Cocos to the west = THE sunset spot on Holbox (cocktails at Painapol Beach Bar). And from June to November moonless nights reveal bioluminescent plankton: every movement in the water lights up blue sparks.

Tips Experts Toucan

The real tips the guides don't give you. 8 terrain shortcuts to save time, money and frustration.

⛴️
Access

Ferry from Chiquilá

No direct access: Cancún → Chiquilá (2h30 by ADO bus or car), then 25 min ferry, $14 AR. Last departure 9:30pm. Secure parking in Chiquilá ($5/day).

🦈
Fauna

Whale shark outing at 6 a.m.

Book an outing with a SEMARNAT-certified operator (limit 2 people per shark). Obligatory departure 6am, 1h boat, snorkel, return 1pm.

🚲
Transport

Bike > electric cart

Bicycle $8/day. Electric cart $50/day (useful only for remote Punta Mosquito). For the pueblo, walking is faster.

💧
Cenotes & sea

Organic sunscreen mandatory

Classic creams prohibited for cenote/snorkel/whale shark outings (toxic for plankton). OK brands: Stream2Sea, Sun Bum mineral, Mexitan.

📵
Connectivity

Limited wifi = real disconnection

Satellite Internet, slow and unstable. Many hotels offer wifi at reception only. Take advantage of this to really get away from it all.

📅
Seasonality

Avoid August = peak tourist season

Mexican + European vacations = saturation. Hotels +50%, restaurants full, beach crowded. Prefer June-July (whale sharks + fewer people) or November.

💵
Cash

Cash compulsory (almost everywhere)

Many restaurants & activities refuse CB or charge +5%. Limited ATMs on the island, frequent queues. Withdraw essentials in Cancún or Chiquilá.

🛂
Formalities

No EU visa < 90 days

Passport valid 6 months after return. FMM card (~$30) issued on arrival, to be kept throughout stay.

⚠️ Avoid the classic pitfalls

  • Arriving in Holbox in August: Mexican + European tourist peak, hotels saturated, prices +50%. Peak in July or November.
  • Book a whale shark outing out of season : June → Sept 15 officially. Other than that, it's a scam or uncertified boats.
  • Touching whale sharks: strict SEMARNAT ban, fine, expulsion. Respectful distance of 2 m required.
  • Count 100% on the credit card: many restaurants & tours only accept cash. ATMs often out of order or saturated.
  • Drink tap water: undrinkable. Water bottles everywhere, but bring your own reusable water bottle (the island's anti-plastic initiative).
  • Driving fast in a buggy: 20 km/h speed limit, sandy streets, children everywhere. The slower you go, the more you enjoy it.

When to see whale sharks
