Four ecosystems in a single park

Manuel Antonio — small 1,983-hectare national park on the central Pacific coast, between Quepos and Damas. Although among the smallest in Costa Rica, it is most visited thanks to its unique magic: 4 ecosystems in one (primary forest, mangroves, coral reefs, paradise beaches) within a 5-minute walk of each other. Forbes ranked Playa Manuel Antonio in the Top 10 Most Beautiful Beaches in the World.

The other force: the extreme concentration of wildlife. Over 2 km of trails, you'll encounter brown-throated sloth (2 m from the path), Capuchin monkeys, howler monkeys, Titi squirrel monkeys (endemic to Costa Rica), iguanas, Coatis, Aras Macau. The town of Quepos (7 km away) is the accommodation base—port, sportfishing (swordfish, marlin), restaurants, nightlife. XQP Quepos Airport is 15 minutes away, or a 3-hour drive from San José.

Our field advice (on-site DMC since 2018): 3 nights in Manuel Antonio — 1 day National Park (entry at 7 am mandatory, closed Mondays), 1 day Damas Island (mangroves, dolphins) or Playa Biesanz, 1 day relaxation. Ideal at the end of your trip after Arenal + Monteverde to finish on the beach.

⚠️ Avoid — classic pitfalls

  • Visit the park on MONDAY: It's closed. This is crucial information that independent travelers often overlook.
  • Without a reservation during peak season: 3000 visitors per day maximum. Access denied without a QR code for a ticket purchased online in advance.
  • Without a nature guide: We missed 80% of wildlife. The investment of $45 per person was entirely justified.
  • Feed the animals Hyper-aggressive monkeys result from tourists feeding them. Forbidden, dangerous.
  • Staying in one place all day: Too hot after 11 AM, crowded. Better: park in the morning + Biesanz beach or hotel in the afternoon.
  • Drinking tap water: Not potable. All hotels provide filtered water—bring a water bottle.
