The Teatro Nacional (1897), inspired by European opera houses, is Costa Rica's most emblematic monument. 1h guided tour to discover the foyers, stage, halls, Villa's paintings. The Mercado Central of San José has existed since 1880. A labyrinth of stalls: sodas (Soda Tala, Pepe), tropical fruit vendors, herbalists (yerberos), tortilleras, florists, crafts. Authentic casado at $5, gallo pinto, fresh ceviche. Local immersion at its best. A top street food/culture experience.
The Barrio Escalante = the heart of the new Tico culinary scene. Farm-to-table restaurants, roaster cafés, gastrobars, creative brunches. Signature addresses: Sikwa Restaurante (indigenous cuisine), Saúl (fusion), Cafe Mundo, Ti Maria. A trendy neighborhood 10 min by taxi from downtown. Pedestrian stroll on Calle 33.

Uber is very developed in SJO, cheaper than taxis. Official red taxis also safe. No metro. For the volcanoes: car or organized tour.
San José = a transit/quick-discovery city. 1-2 nights are enough for the Teatro, Mercado, Barrio Escalante, Poás. Beyond that, better to head for nature.
