Planning Your Trip to Belize: A Practical Guide for 2026

Twenty times a month, I get the same question: «Who exactly is Belize for?» My answer is always the same: for those who want the Caribbean Sea, Central American jungle, and the ease of an English-speaking country, all in a compact package. Here's what you need to know before you go.

How much time to plan for

Less than eight days, don't go — I'm firm on that. Belize is earned: the distances are short in kilometers but long in time (unpaved roads, boat connections). Eight days allow for a glimpse of Cayo + the Cayes. Twelve days add the south (Placencia or Hopkins). Fifteen days open up regional combinations with neighboring Guatemala (Tikal is 2 hours from the border).

My favorite format 12 days, with 4 nights Cayo, 3 nights Cayes, 3 nights south, 2 nights in transit.

What budget to plan for

Belize is the most expensive country in Central America. The currency is the Belize dollar (BZD), pegged at 2 BZD = 1 USD. Prices are often displayed in USD in tourist areas.

Economic 80-120 €/day/person. Guesthouses, chicken buses, street food. Possible but basic.

Comfort €150-€250/day/person. Charming lodges, private transfers, guided excursions. This is the sweet spot.

Premium : 300-500 €/day/person. Resorts on private islands, dives with a personal guide, internal flights. Belize has some exceptional addresses in this range.

Surprising budget post : excursions. The Blue Hole by plane costs $250-$300 USD, ATM cave $100 USD, a snorkeling day $80-$120 USD. Plan for $500-$800 USD in activities per person for a 12-day stay.

When to go

Dry season (December-May): the best period. Temperatures 25-32°C, calm sea, optimal underwater visibility. February-April is the peak for diving.

Rainy season (June–November): Daily tropical showers (2–3 hours in the afternoon), but the jungle is greener and prices drop by 20–30 %. Hurricane risk in September–October—best avoided.

Micro-season The whale shark visits Gladden Spit from March to June (peaking in April-May around the full moon). This is one of the few places in the world to dive with them in shallow waters.

How to get around

Internal flights Tropic Air and Maya Island Air connect Belize City to the Cayes (15 min), Placencia (45 min), and other destinations. $80-180 one-way. Book in advance during peak season.

Water taxis Belize City → Caye Caulker (45 min, 20 USD) and San Pedro (90 min, 30 USD). Two reliable companies: San Pedro Belize Express and Ocean Ferry.

Car rental Useful only for Cayo and the south. Main roads paved, secondary roads dirt. $60-90/day with insurance. Drive on the right.

Chicken buses Limited but functional network on the Western Highway (Belize City → San Ignacio, 3 hours, 5 USD). The experience is worth the trip.

Formalities and Health

Visa No visa required for French, Belgian, Swiss, and Canadian citizens (stays up to 30 days). Passport valid for 6 months after date of entry.

Vaccines No vaccinations are mandatory. Recommended vaccinations include Hepatitis A/B and Typhoid. Antimalarials are advised if traveling to deep jungle areas (Cayo, Orange Walk).

Security Belize City (downtown) has a tough reputation — don't hang out there at night. Outside of it, the country is very safe. The Cayes and Cayo are peaceful.

Exit tax : $40 USD per person at the airport (often included in the ticket).
