Guatemala Itineraries: 10, 14, or 18 Days — Which One Should You Choose?

September 30, 2025 ✍️ Tristan Martin ⏱ 4 min read

Building an itinerary in Guatemala depends first and foremost on one question: how much time do you have, and what pace do you prefer? Here are the three frameworks we most often offer our clients, tested and refined over 15 years of fieldwork.

10 days / 9 nights — balanced essentials

Target audience First discovery, travelers who don't want to run.

Itinerary :

  • Day 1 Arrival Guatemala City → transfer to Antigua (1 hour). Overnight in a colonial boutique hotel.
  • Day 2 : Visit Antigua on foot (Cathedral ruins, Santo Domingo Convent, local market) + Guatemalan cooking class in the afternoon.
  • Day 3 Pacaya Volcano Ascent (3/4 hr, easy level, $30 with guide) + tasting marshmallows roasted on hot lava.
  • Day 4 Transfer Antigua → Panajachel (Lake Atitlan, 3 hours). Boat to Santa Cruz or Santiago Atitlan for 3 nights.
  • Day 5 Visit Mayan villages (San Juan La Laguna for textile cooperatives, Santiago Atitlán for the brotherhood).
  • Day 6 Sunrise kayaking + free day (yoga, volcano hike San Pedro for the athletic).
  • Day 7 Chichicastenango Market (morning, ideally Thursday or Sunday) + return to Antigua.
  • Day 8 Guatemala City → Flores (1 hr, ≈ 200 USD). Transfer to Tikal. Overnight in a Jungle Lodge within the park.
  • Day 9 Tikal at sunrise (Temple IV) + full site visit + return to Flores.
  • Day 10 : Flores Flights → Guatemala City + international return flight.

Average budget (excluding international flights): €1100-€1500 per person in 3-4 star comfort, double occupancy.

14 days / 13 nights — the complete experience

Target audience Experienced travelers, first deep discovery.

Addition to the 10 days :

  • Day 4 old integrate Chichicastenango As a stopover (1 night) before Atitlán, to experience the market immersion.
  • Days 5-7 : 3 nights Atitlán instead of 2. Allows for San Pedro (young and bustling), Santa Catarina (lake view and Casa Palopó), and a weaving class in San Juan La Laguna.
  • Days 11-12 2 nights Semuc Champey + Lanquín Caves. Tubing in the underground river, swimming in the turquoise pools.
  • Days 13-14 Return via Cobán → Guatemala City + flight.

Plus Ascension of the Acatenango volcano with an overnight stay facing Fuego (alternative to Pacaya, difficult but unforgettable level), Mayan cooking class in Santiago Atitlán.

Average budget 1700-2200 € / person, double occupancy.

18 days / 17 nights — Complete Guatemala, Caribbean included

Target audience travelers who want to embrace the whole country, including the Caribbean coast.

Addition to 14 days :

  • Days 14-17 Descent to the Río Dulce + Livingston on the Caribbean side. Boat trip on the Río Dulce (most beautiful canyon in the country). Night at Round House or Finca Tatín. Garifuna culture, cuisine with coconut milk, swimming in hot springs Hot Springs.
  • Day 18 Return Puerto Barrios → Guatemala City + international flight.

Plus Observation of manatees in the Río Dulce, Garifuna dinner (tapado, coconut fish soup), excursion to the hot springs Paradise Farm.

Average budget €2400-€2900 / person, double occupancy.

Guatemala + Belize Combo (15-21 days)

Ideal for travelers who want to complement their trip to Guatemala with the Caribbean beaches. Border crossing at Melchor de Mencos (3 hours from Tikal).

Typical itinerary 17 days :

  • 8 Days Guatemala (Antigua + Atitlan + Tikal)
  • Belize Border (1 day)
  • 8 Days Belize (San Ignacio Jungle + Caye Caulker Beach + Blue Hole Diving)

It's the program «Maya & Reefs» that we offer as self-drive or with a private driver.

Guatemala + Honduras (Copán) Combo — 12 Days

For Maya world enthusiasts. El Florido border crossing (2 hours from Antigua via Río Hondo).

  • 7 Days Guatemala (Antigua + Atitlan)
  • 1 day transit
  • 4 days in Honduras (Copán ruins, another great Mayan city, less visited than Tikal but with unique sculptures)

What pace to adopt?

«The golden rule in Guatemala: never plan more than 2 accommodation changes per week. The country rewards those who take their time.»

Avoid itineraries that pack 6-7 places into 10 days—it's doable but you'll end up exhausted without truly experiencing the country. It's better to block out 3 nights per main stop and enjoy yourself.
