Planning your trip to Guatemala: practical guide 2026

Guatemala is the densest destination in Central America, and the one my clients prepare worst nine times out of ten. Here's what I really say when asked how to organize it. No detours, no copying the generalist guidebooks.

How much time to plan, really

Less than ten days, don't go. I'm firm on this. The time difference is seven hours, the country is huge, and transfers are long (winding mountain roads, a mandatory domestic flight for Tikal). In five days you'll do Antigua, and that's all you'll have done.

My thresholds, in the order I recommend them:

• Ten to twelve days : Antigua + Lake Atitlán + Tikal in a loop. That's the honest minimum, and it's still intense.
• Fifteen to seventeen days : add Chichicastenango (Thursday/Sunday market), a corner of the Pacific (Monterrico, turtle sanctuary), and breathe.
• Twenty to twenty-one days : include Semuc Champey (turquoise waterfalls) and Livingston on the Caribbean side (Garifuna culture).
• Regional combo : Guatemala + Belize, or Guatemala + Honduras (Copán ruins) — the country is the natural gateway to its neighbors.

What's the real budget

Guatemala is the cheapest country in Central America in absolute terms. 30 to 40% cheaper than Costa Rica, comparable to Nicaragua. But beware: the recent rise in Antigua (boutique hotel boom) sometimes creates surprising gaps.

Excluding international flights, the ranges I give in May 2026 for two people in a double room:

• Budget travel: 60 to 90 euros per day per person. Well-kept three-star hotels, meals in comedores (3-6 euros a dish), long-distance buses, essential visits on foot or by taxi.
• Comfort trip: 130 to 180 euros per day per person. Four-star boutique hotels (Casa Santo Domingo in Antigua, Casa Palopó at Atitlán), car with driver or private transfers, quality restaurants (12-22 euros).
• Premium trip: 220 to 350 euros per day per person. Benchmark eco-lodges (Mesón Panza Verde, Casa Palopó suite), systematic private transfers, exclusive experiences — Acatenango volcano ascent with private guide and a night in a premium cabin.

A few line items to budget:

• Domestic flight Guatemala City to Flores (for Tikal): 150 to 220 dollars round trip. Book two months ahead; Avianca and TAG are the reliable airlines.
• Tikal park entry: 150 quetzals (≈ 18 euros) per person, +100 quetzals for sunrise.
• Tips: 10% expected in restaurants. Often included in the bill.

Card or cash : your bank card works everywhere in tourist areas. But for the Atitlán villages, Chichicastenango and the hinterland, bring 100 to 200 dollars in quetzals or dollars in cash.

When to Go: What the Guides Don't Tell You

Guatemala has two seasons and several microclimates.

Dry season: November to April. Total comfort. Blue skies, stable temperatures (15-25°C at altitude, 28-35°C in the lowlands), archaeological sites accessible everywhere. It's also the tourist high season.

My strong opinion the Holy Week (Holy Week before Easter) in Antigua is one of the most spectacular religious spectacles in the world — carpets of flowers and colored sawdust in the streets, processions of penitents, huge crowds. It's sublime, but it's also the week when prices double and getting around becomes nearly impossible. Either you go for for Semana Santa (book six months ahead), or you avoid it by a week.

Green season: May to October. Late-afternoon rains on the Pacific and the altiplano, landscapes of an eye-watering green, gentle prices. My favorite window: November (still dry, already calm) or April (just before the rains).

The trap : September-October is the rain peak, sometimes cyclonic. Possible, but you risk entire days in downpour mode.

How to get around

Rental car : possible but not recommended. Mountain roads are winding, signage unreliable, and some corners (Livingston, Tikal) are reachable only by boat or plane. A car with a private driver is the solution I recommend for a Toucan trip: 80 to 120 euros per day, and you gain a lot in fluidity and safety.

Domestic flight : essential for Tikal (unless you plan two days of buses round trip). Avianca and TAG from Guatemala City. A 1h flight.

Express bus : if you travel solo or as a couple without children, the bus network from Guatemala City covers Antigua (1h, 5 dollars) and the main routes. For the Maya villages around Atitlán, lanchas (taxi boats) on the lake, 2-5 dollars per crossing.

Formalities

For French nationals in 2026: No visa required for tourist stays under 90 days. Passport valid at least six months after your return date.

Vaccines : none mandatory arriving directly from Europe. Recommended: DTP, hepatitis A and B, typhoid up to date. Antimalarial recommended only if you plan the low-altitude Petén (Tikal is not a high-risk zone) or the Caribbean coast.

Security : Guatemala sometimes has a heavy reputation. In practice, the tourist areas (Antigua, Atitlán, Tikal) are safe with normal vigilance. Avoid unofficial night buses, don't move around Guatemala City at night, and favor drivers recommended by your agency. Toucan Discovery only works with certified local operators.
