Mexico Itineraries: 10, 15, and 21 Days to Explore the Country

Mexico is too big for a single trip. Here are three formats so you don't spread yourself thin.

The golden rule: choose, don't accumulate

The classic mistake in Mexico is trying to see everything. The country spans 4,000 km east to west. A domestic flight Mexico City-Cancún takes 2h — the equivalent of Paris-Athens. Better two regions in depth than five in a flyby.

The four main tourist poles: Mexico City-Center, Oaxaca-Pacific, Chiapas, Yucatán. Each deserves 4-5 days minimum. A 10-day trip = one pole. 15 days = two poles. 21 days = three poles. Simple.

10-day itinerary: the complete Yucatán

Day 1 — Arrival Cancún, transfer to Valladolid. Skip Cancún, head inland. Valladolid: a colonial town, cenotes within walking distance, a quiet vibe.

Day 2 — Chichén Itzá + cenote. Morning visit (arrive at 8 am). Afternoon: Ik Kil or Suytun cenote. Back to Valladolid.

Day 3 — Transfer to Mérida. Drive via Izamal (the yellow city, a monumental Franciscan convent). Settle into Mérida.

Day 4 — Mérida. Centro histórico, Lucas de Gálvez market, Paseo de Montejo. Yucatecan gastronomy: cochinita pibil, papadzules, sopa de lima.

Day 5 — Uxmal + Ruta Puuc. A Puuc archaeological site, less touristy than Chichén Itzá and architecturally superior. Kabah as a bonus.

Day 6 — Transfer to the coast, Celestún or Progreso. Flamingos at Celestún (biosphere reserve) or beach at Progreso. Drive toward Tulum.

Day 7 — Tulum + cenotes. The Tulum ruins (arrive early). Afternoon: Gran Cenote, Cenote Calavera or Cenote Dos Ojos.

Day 8 — Sian Ka'an. A UNESCO biosphere reserve — jungle, mangroves, Maya canals, dolphins. Day trip from Tulum.

Day 9 — Bacalar. Drive south (2h). The seven-color lagoon, kayak, sailboat, swimming. Night by the lagoon.

Day 10 — Bacalar + return to Cancún. Free morning. Drive or transfer to the airport (3h30).

15-day itinerary: Mexico City + Oaxaca + Pacific

Days 1-3 — Mexico City. Zócalo, Templo Mayor, Museo Nacional de Antropología, Coyoacán (Frida Kahlo), Roma-Condesa, Xochimilco. Three full days.

Day 4 — Teotihuacán + transfer to Oaxaca. The Pyramids of the Sun and Moon in the morning (1h from Mexico City). Flight or night bus to Oaxaca.

Days 5-8 — Oaxaca. Day 5: the city, markets, mezcal. Day 6: Monte Albán + Árbol del Tule. Day 7: textile villages (Teotitlán del Valle) + Hierve el Agua. Day 8: Sierra Norte (community hike) or an Oaxacan cooking class.

Day 9 — Transfer to the Pacific coast. The winding Oaxaca-Puerto Escondido road (6h by minivan or 1h by plane). Settle in on the coast.

Days 10-12 — Pacific coast. Puerto Escondido (surf, Carrizalillo beach), Mazunte (turtle protection center), Zipolite (a free-spirited vibe). Possible excursion to the bioluminescence of Laguna de Manialtepec.

Day 13 — Transfer to Oaxaca + flight to Mexico City. Back to Oaxaca, evening flight to Mexico City.

Days 14-15 — Mexico City. Frida Kahlo Museum (book online), Coyoacán market, last tacos al pastor. Return flight.

21-day itinerary: the grand tour Mexico City-Oaxaca-Chiapas-Yucatán

The first 8 days follow the Mexico City + Oaxaca itinerary above (without the Pacific coast), then:

Days 9-12 — Chiapas. Flight Oaxaca-Tuxtla Gutiérrez. Day 9: Cañón del Sumidero by lancha. Days 10-11: San Cristóbal de las Casas (market, San Juan Chamula, Zinacantán). Day 12: Agua Azul waterfalls + transfer to Palenque.

Day 13 — Palenque. A Maya city in the jungle. Arrive at opening (8 am). Free afternoon or Misol-Há excursion.

Day 14 — Transfer to the Yucatán. Flight Villahermosa-Mérida or a long drive (8h) via Campeche (recommended stop: a UNESCO fortified colonial city).

Days 15-20 — Yucatán. Follow the 10-day Yucatán itinerary in condensed form (6 days instead of 10): Mérida (2d), Valladolid + Chichén Itzá (1d), Tulum + cenotes (2d), Bacalar (1d).

Day 21 — Return flight from Cancún.

Combining Mexico + Central America

Mexico + Guatemala (21d) : 10 days Yucatán + land crossing to Guatemala (Belize or the Chiapas-Guatemala border). 10 days Guatemala (Flores/Tikal, Lake Atitlán, Antigua).

Mexico + Belize (14-18d) : 10 days Yucatán + land crossing to Belize (Chetumal-Corozal). 4-8 days Belize (cayes, Cayo, the barrier reef).
