Nicaragua Itineraries: 8, 12, or 15 Days — Which One Should You Choose?

Building an itinerary in Nicaragua depends first and foremost on one question: how much time do you have, and what pace do you prefer? Here are the three frameworks we most often propose to our clients, tested and refined over 15 years of fieldwork.

8 days / 7 nights — the balanced essential

Target audience First discovery, travelers who don't want to run.

Itinerary :

• Day 1 Arrival Managua → Granada (1 hour transfer). Overnight in a colonial boutique hotel.
• Day 2 Visit Granada (cathedral, Calle Calzada, San Francisco Convent) + afternoon Masaya market + evening Catarina viewpoint.
• Day 3 Masaya Volcano (incandescent lava, ideally late afternoon) + Apoyo Lagoon (swimming, kayaking).
• Day 4 Transfer Granada → Rivas (1 hour) → San Jorge ferry → Ometepe (island). Overnight on the Concepción volcano side in Moyogalpa.
• Day 5 Ometepe - Maderas hike (5-7 hours) or Concepción Volcano (8-10 hours for the sporty) + Ojo de Agua baths.
• Day 6 Ometepe — biking + relaxation. Sunset facing the lake.
• Day 7 Ferry return → San Juan del Sur (Pacific coast, 1 hour). Beach, surfing, local cuisine.
• Day 8 Transfer Managua + return flight.

12 days / 11 nights — The Complete Pacific Experience

Target audience Experienced travelers, first deep discovery.

Addition to 8 days :

• Day 4 old integrate Lion instead of Ometepe direct (1 night). Visit UNESCO cathedral, León Viejo ruins, Cerro Negro volcano ascent with sandboarding (volcanic sledding, 30 USD).
• Days 5-6 Transfer León → Ometepe via Managua. 2 nights Ometepe instead of 1.
• Days 9-11 3 nights San Juan del Sur + Playa Maderas (surfing) + La Flor beach (turtle watching from October to February).
• Day 12 : return Managua + flight.

Plus : ascension of Cerro Negro (Sandboarding), night on the volcano in an eco-lodge (Las Plumerias on Ometepe), surfing session at Playa Maderas with a local.

15 days / 14 nights — Complete Nicaragua, Including the Caribbean

Target audience Travelers who want to embrace the whole country, including the Caribbean.

Addition to the 12 days :

• Days 12-14 vol Managua → Big Corn Island (charter La Costeña, 1 flight/day). 2 nights Big Corn or Little Corn (recommended). Diving, snorkeling, inland lagoon.
• Day 15 : return Big Corn → Managua → international flight.

Plus Observation of turtles at night, La Flor, diving the Corn Islands reefs, Creole dinner on Little Corn (lobster $8), kayaking on the turquoise sea.

Nicaragua + Costa Rica Combo (15-21 days)

Ideal for travelers who want to compare the two sides of Central America. Open border at Peñas Blancas (3 hours from Granada).

Typical itinerary 18 days :

• 6 Days Nicaragua (Granada + Ometepe + San Juan del Sur)
• Peñas Blancas Border (1 day)
• 11 Days Costa Rica (Arenal + Monteverde + Manuel Antonio or Tortuguero)

Avoid itineraries that pack 6-7 places into 10 days—it's doable but you'll end up exhausted without truly experiencing the country. It's better to block out 3 nights per main stop and enjoy yourself.
