Twenty times a month I get the same question: how much time should I plan for, how much does it cost, when should I go to Nicaragua. Here's what I really answer. No beating around the bush, no copying guidebooks, no selling what doesn't hold up.
How much time to plan, without cheating
I'll say it plainly: Less than eight days, don't go.
I've had couples leave for six days. All of them, without exception, returned frustrated. The Paris-Managua flight with a layover takes twelve to fourteen hours. The time difference is seven hours. It takes two days to recover from it. If you subtract that from your week, you're left with four useful days. That's not traveling, it's performance tourism.
My thresholds, in the order I recommend them to my clients:
- Eight to ten days Granada + Ometepe Island + South Pacific (San Juan del Sur or Pedasí in Nicaragua). That's the honest minimum.
- Twelve to fourteen days : add León and Masaya, and potentially switch to the Corn Islands for two to three nights.
- Fifteen to twenty-one days We're incorporating Solentiname, the northern coffee region (Matagalpa, Jinotega), and taking our time.
- Three weeks and more neighboring Costa Rica, or Honduras (Roatan Island) to the north.
My eight-day self-drive «Essential Nicaragua» itinerary is what I recommend nine out of ten times for a first-time visit. To those who ask me to cram ten days into five, I say no. Absolutely not. That's not my goal when I create a trip.
What's the real budget
This is the point where Nicaragua is most surprising. The country costs 30 to 40 % less than Costa Rica for comparable services, and it's a proven fact. My honest opinion: it's no longer the «cheap» country of the 2000s, but it's excellent value for money.
Excluding international flights, here are the price ranges I'm providing for May 2026, for two people in a double room:
- Budget travel: 60 to 90 euros per day per person. Clean three-star hotels, meals in the comedores (3-6 euros per dish), long-distance buses, essential visits on foot or by taxi.
- Comfort travel: 110 to 160 euros per day per person. Four-star boutique hotels (Tribal in Granada, Mukul resort on the Pacific), SUV rental car, mid-range restaurants (€10-18), one guided activity per day.
- Premium Voyage: 200 to 320 euros per day per person. High-end eco-lodges (Jicaro Island on the lake, Morgan's Rock on the Pacific), private transfers, exclusive experiences.
A few more positions to fill:
- Domestic flight Managua → Big Corn Island: $180 round trip. Book two months in advance, La Costeña has few flights.
- Masaya Volcano entrance: $10 per person, and an additional $15 for the night tour (the most spectacular).
- Tips: 10 % is expected in restaurants. Often included in the bill («propina incluida»), so be sure to check.
Card or cash Your credit card is accepted everywhere in tourist areas. However, for Ometepe, the Corn Islands, Solentiname, and the backcountry, plan for $100 to $200 in cash. There are no reliable ATMs on the Corn Islands.
When to Go: What the Guides Don't Tell You
Nicaragua has two seasons but microclimates that can trick you.
Dry season: November to April. This is the comfortable season. Blue skies are almost guaranteed, temperatures are stable (24-32°C depending on altitude), and the sea is calm everywhere. It's also the local high tourist season, and certain periods should be avoided – I'll get back to that.
My strong opinion the Holy Week (Holy Week before Easter) is sacred in Nicaragua. Many hotels close, and the colonial cities are taken over by processions. If you want the authentic experience of Central America's grand religious rituals, it's magnificent. If you just want to travel, postpone your trip by a week. Prices drop, and the experience becomes simpler.
Green season: May to October. Rain in the late afternoon over the Pacific, landscapes of an eye-watering green, soft prices. My favorite time of year is November. — The rains are ending, the vegetation is still explosive, and the prices are those of the low season. This is my window, and I'm not keeping it to myself.
The trap September-October is the peak of the rainy season in the Pacific. It's possible to go then, but you run the risk of having entire days of torrential rain.
The Unique Character of the Caribbean that no one mentions: The Corn Islands have an inverted microclimate.. When it rains on the Pacific in July-August, it's dry there. For those who can only travel in mid-summer, this is an escape route.
Seasonal Bonus the Olive ridley sea turtle migration at La Flor, in the South Pacific, from July to November. I saw it in September 2021—thousands of turtles laying eggs in a single night on three kilometers of beach. It's one of the most impressive sights I've seen in the region.
How to get around
Rental car Ideal for Granada, Masaya, Pacific, Pedasí. French permits accepted. The main roads are in good condition, some rural areas may require a light SUV. Fuel is around $1.10 per liter.
Domestic flight essential for the Corn Islands. La Costeña and Avianca operate from Managua. Fares range from $150 to $300 depending on the destination. Book two to three months in advance.
Express bus If you are traveling alone or as a couple without children, the bus network from Managua covers Granada (1 hour, $2), León (2 hours, $4), Rivas for Ometepe (2 hours, $4). Comfortable, air-conditioned, inexpensive.
Ferry to Ometepe From San Jorge (port of Rivas), 1 hour crossing. Three companies, departures every hour in high season.
Formalities
For French nationals in 2026: No visa required for tourist stays of less than 90 days. Passport valid for at least six months after the return date. Upon arrival, you are asked to pay a $10 tourism tax in cash (to be expected). And proof of a return ticket.
Vaccines No mandatory vaccines for direct arrivals from Europe. Recommended: Up-to-date DTP, Hepatitis A, and B, and Typhoid. Antimalarial recommended only if you plan to visit the Caribbean coast (Bluefields, Corn Islands); otherwise, unnecessary.
Security Nicaragua is one of the safest countries in Central America in terms of crime. Normal vigilance in large cities (closed bags, discreet jewelry). Periodic political tensions — check the Quai d'Orsay website before leaving.
