Honduras is the cheapest and least touristy country in continental Central America. It's also the most surprising. Here's everything you need to know before you go — from someone who has returned several times a year since 2019.
How much time to plan for
Ten days minimum. Honduras is bigger than you think and internal transport is slow. Ten days allow a Copán + north coast + one island circuit. Fourteen days add the interior (Lago de Yojoa, Gracias, Celaque). Three weeks open regional combos with neighboring Guatemala.
My favorite format : 14 days, with 3 nights Copán, 2 nights Lago de Yojoa, 2 nights La Ceiba/Pico Bonito, 5 nights Roatán or Utila, 2 transit nights.
What budget to plan for
Honduras is the region's most affordable country. The currency is the lempira (HNL), about 25 HNL = 1 USD.
Economic : €40-60/day/person. Hostels, chicken buses, comedores. Very doable, especially on the mainland.
Comfort : €80-150/day/person. Charming hotels, private transfers, guided excursions. The sweet spot — quality is excellent for the price.
Premium : €200-400/day/person. Island resorts, dives with a personal guide, domestic flights. Roatán has high-end addresses comparable to the Caribbean at half the price.
Surprising budget post : diving. A PADI Open Water on Utila costs 250-350 USD (versus 500-700 in Thailand or the Maldives). One of the best value-for-money deals in the world.
When to go
Dry season (December-April): the best period for the mainland. Temperatures 25-32°C, clear skies. February-April is the diving peak (best visibility).
Rainy season (May-November): daily tropical showers (2-3 hours in the afternoon), but the vegetation is lush and prices drop 20-30%. Hurricane risk September-November — keep an eye on it.
Micro-season : whale sharks visit Utila from March to May and September to October. One of the rare places in the world where swimming with them is almost guaranteed in season.
How to get around
Internal flights : Easy Sky and CM Airlines link San Pedro Sula to Roatán (30 min, 80-150 USD one way) and La Ceiba (20 min). The La Ceiba → Roatán ferry (Galaxy Wave, 1h15, 40 USD) is the economical alternative.
Quality buses : Hedman Alas is the premium company (comparable to ADO buses in Mexico). San Pedro Sula → Copán (3h, 25 USD), San Pedro Sula → La Ceiba (3h, 20 USD). Comfortable and safe.
Car rental : useful for Lago de Yojoa and the interior. Main roads paved, secondary roads dirt. 40-70 USD/day with insurance. Drive on the right.
Lanchas : small shared boats for coastal travel and national park excursions. Agree on the price before boarding.
Formalities and Health
Visa : no visa for French, Belgian, Swiss and Canadian nationals (stays up to 90 days, CA-4 agreement shared with Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua). Passport valid 6 months after entry.
Vaccines : none mandatory. Recommended: hepatitis A/B, typhoid. Antimalarials advised for deep jungle (La Mosquitia).
Security : Honduras has a difficult reputation — partly justified for San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa (city centers at night). Outside the big cities, the country is safe for travelers. Copán, the islands and the north coast are quiet. Common-sense precautions: no ostentation, no night travel in cities, quality transport.
