Honduras itineraries: 10 and 14 days between Copán, reef and mountains

I've composed dozens of Honduras itineraries since 2019. Most travelers don't know where to start — the country is little known, and information in French is nearly nonexistent. Here are two tested frameworks that work, plus a combo with Guatemala.

Short framework: 10 days — Copán, north coast and Roatán

Day 1 : Arrival San Pedro Sula, transfer to Copán Ruinas (3h). Night at Hotel Marina Copan or Hacienda San Lucas.

Day 2 : Full day at the archaeological site of Copán + tunnels + sculpture museum. Local guide recommended (Don Rigoberto or the Asociación de Guías). Night in Copán.

Day 3 Morning Macaw Mountain Bird Park. Afternoon village visit, hot springs Luna Jaguar (20 min). Night in Copán.

Day 4 : Drive Copán → Lago de Yojoa (4h). Afternoon Pulhapanzak Waterfall. Night at D&D Brewery & Lodge or Finca Las Glorias.

Day 5 : Morning birdwatching at the lake. Drive Lago de Yojoa → La Ceiba (3h). Night in La Ceiba.

Day 6 : Ferry La Ceiba → Roatán (Galaxy Wave, 1h15). Settle in. Afternoon at West Baybeach. Night on Roatán.

Day 7 : Diving or snorkeling day. The reef starts 30 meters from the beach at West Bay. 2 dives: 70-90 USD.

Day 8 : Excursion to Roatán's east side: Punta Gorda (Garifuna village), Camp Bay Beachbeach. Night on Roatán.

Day 9 : Free day. Kayaking, snorkeling, or a trip to Cayos Cochinos (full day, 120 USD). Night on Roatán.

Day 10 : Flight Roatán → San Pedro Sula. Return flight.

Indicative budget : €1,200-1,800 per person (excluding international flights).

Long framework: 14 days — The complete Honduras

Days 1-3 : Copán program identical to the short framework (site, tunnels, Macaw Mountain, Luna Jaguar).

Day 4 : Drive Copán → Gracias (3h30). Settle in. Afternoon visit of the colonial center, Fortaleza San Cristóbal. Night at Hotel Celaque or Posada de Don Juan.

Day 5 : Hike Celaque National Park (full day, up to the first camp in the cloud forest). For the summit (2,849 m), plan a 2-day bivouac. Night in Gracias.

Day 6 : Morning at the hot springs of Hot Springs. Afternoon visiting a Lenca community (The Field, black pottery). Drive Gracias → Lago de Yojoa (4h). Night at Lago de Yojoa.

Day 7 : Birdwatching + Pulhapanzak waterfall. Drive to La Ceiba (3h). Night in La Ceiba.

Day 8 : Morning hike Pico Bonito (half-day, waterfalls). Afternoon ferry → Roatán. Settle in. Night on Roatán.

Day 9 : Reef diving or snorkeling day. Night on Roatán.

Day 10 : Excursion to Cayos Cochinos or Roatán's east side. Night on Roatán.

Day 11 : Ferry Roatán → Utila (via La Ceiba or direct boat). Settle in. Night on Utila.

Day 12 : Utila diving or snorkeling. In season (March-May, Sept-Oct): whale shark outing. Night on Utila.

Day 13 : Ferry Utila → La Ceiba. Drive or fly to San Pedro Sula. Transit night.

Day 14 Return flight.

Indicative budget : €1,800-2,800 per person.

Honduras + Guatemala combo (14 days)

The Honduras-Guatemala border (El Florido / Copán) is easy to cross. The classic combo:

Days 1-4 Guatemala Antigua (2 nights) + Lake Atitlán (2 nights).

Day 5 : Shuttle Guatemala → Copán Ruinas (7-8h with the border crossing, or direct Antigua-Copán shuttle).

Days 6-14 : Honduras circuit (Copán + north coast + islands depending on available time).

The advantage: combining Guatemala's cultural richness (Antigua, indigenous markets, volcanoes) with Honduras's nature and diving. Two complementary countries, one trip.

The Golden Rule

Honduras has to be earned. The roads are long, the transfers sometimes chaotic. But that's what filters the travelers — those who make it here are rewarded with authentic experiences and unbeatable prices. Allow time for the unexpected — in Honduras, the journey is part of the trip.
