San Juan River — a mythical river of 190 km Who connects the Lake Nicaragua to the Caribbean, natural border with Costa Rica. For centuries, an alternative route to Panama: desired by Spaniards, English pirates (Henry Morgan), Vanderbilt (California transit 1849-1869), and even considered for an interoceanic canal before Panama won out. Today = territory forgotten, wild, accessible only by boat or La Costeña flight.

36 islands in the southern part of Lake Cocibolca. In 1966, the Poet and priest Ernesto Cardenal and founded a liberation-inspired Christian community. There he taught the peasant-fishermen naïve painting. A primitive art school is born world-renowned (works in MoMA, Centre Pompidou). The Castle of the Immaculate Conception

Spanish fort built in 1675 to defend Granada against the English pirates (Henry Morgan attacked three times). 1762, the young Rafaela Herrera (19 years old) heroically defended the fort against the English invasion—a legendary national figure. A picturesque wooden village built on stilts at the foot of the fort, the Diamante Rapids (canoeing), and world-renowned tarpon fishing. Charming hotels: Cabinas Tucan, Posada del Río.

Claro's mobile network in San Carlos is spotty along the river and virtually nonexistent in Solentiname and Indio Maíz. Wi-Fi is available only in hotels. Be prepared to go offline. A satellite phone is recommended for fishermen.

  • ❌ Taking a short layover: Minimum 4 nights. Boat distances, no shortcuts.
  • ❌ Without a guide in Indio Maíz: Dense jungle, dangers (snakes, caimans). A guide is required for the trails.
  • ❌ Return flight on D-Day: Frequent La Costeña cancellations due to weather. Always allow a 1-day buffer before international flights.
  • ❌ Underestimating the rain: wettest region of Nicaragua. Waterproof, waterproof bag, change of clothes.
  • ❌ No cash: There are no ATMs outside of San Carlos. Bring enough USD or córdobas to last 4–5 days.
  • ❌ Missing Solentiname: A classic mistake. It's the spiritual and artistic essence of travel.
