Guanaco · About San Salvador

The capital of the smallest country in America

San Salvador - capital of Smallest continental country in America (21,040 km², half the size of Switzerland), nicknamed "Tom Thumb of America", "Little Thumb." Founded in 1525 by Pedro de Alvarado, it was rebuilt several times following earthquakes (the last one in 2001). In 700 m above sea level, dominated by the San Salvador Volcano (El Boquerón, 1,893 m) to the north and the Lake Ilopango to the east—a remnant of a massive eruption in the 7th century.

Contrasting identities: historic center (Metropolitan Cathedral with the tomb of Archbishop Romero, El Rosario Church with its psychedelic stained-glass windows, Plaza Libertad), modern residential neighborhoods (Zona Rosa, San Benito) with trendy restaurants, Mayan Pipil heritage (David J. Guzmán Anthropology Museum), et Civil War memory 1980–1992 (Museo de la Palabra y la Imagen). El Salvador adopted the U.S. dollar in 2001 and the Bitcoin as legal tender in 2021 — first country in the world. Signature cuisine: the pupusas, stuffed corn galettes, mandatory national dish.

Our on-the-ground tip: 1–2 nights are enough (the capital serves as a transit hub or starting point). Ideal itinerary: 1 day in the city center + Boquerón, 1 day at Joya de Cerén (UNESCO site) or Suchitoto. Top itinerary: San Salvador → Suchitoto (1h30) → Ruta de las Flores (2h) → La Libertad (1h, beaches). SAL Airport is 45 km south (direct route to the Pacific).
