Perquín — a small mountain village (1,100 m altitude) in the rural, remote department of Morazán, located 4h northeast of San Salvador. During the Salvadoran civil war of 1980-1992, Perquín was the seat of the FMLN headquarters (Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional), the guerrilla force fighting the military government. Radio Venceremos, the FMLN's official voice, broadcast from these hills for 11 years, defying aerial bombardments.
Today, Perquín is a destination of memory and ecotourism. The Museo de la Revolución Salvadoreña = a national institution, founded by former combatants, telling the war from the insurgent side (rare in CA). Photos, weapons, clothing, testimonies. 30 min away: El Mozote, site of the December 1981 massacre (1,000+ civilians killed by the army), today a poignant memorial. Beyond the history: pine forests of Cerro Pericón (1,700 m), Río Sapo (crystal-clear river), highland coffee, hiking. A cool temperate climate climate (12-22°C), cold nights.
Our field advice: 2 nights is ideal — 1 memory day (Museo + El Mozote), 1 nature day (Río Sapo, Cerro Pericón). A deep destination, not for every traveler: for those seeking an authentic understanding of modern El Salvador. Combinable with a return to SAL via Suchitoto, or heading down to Bahía Jiquilisco. Not for families with children.

The the most important museum of the Salvadoran civil war, founded by former FMLN combatants in the old headquarters. Themed rooms : weapons (captured and used), photos, clothing, media (Radio Venceremos), recorded personal testimonies. Guides = former combatants, telling their own stories (very moving). $5 entry + tip for the guide. 2-3h visit. Essential for understanding modern El Salvador.
30 min from Perquín, El Mozote = site of the massacre of December 11, 1981. The Atlacatl battalion (US-trained army) exterminated 1,000+ civilians in 3 days in this hamlet and its surroundings, half of them children. Uncovered and acknowledged after the peace accords. Today: a memorial, a plaque listing the names, a remembrance garden, a small museum. A visit with a local guide (formerly a witness/survivor) is deeply moving. Free entry, donations appreciated.
30 min from Perquín, the Río Sapo = a mountain river with crystal-clear blue-green waters, a 2-3h trail along waterfalls and natural pools (swimming allowed). Easy-moderate level. Local guide recommended ($10-15) as the trail is poorly marked. Pine forest setting, parrots calling. Combinable with Perquín's memory sites as a half-day of nature. More impressive in the green season (May-October).
Summit of the local range (1,700 m), Cerro Pericón , home to traditional pine forests — a rare landscape in El Salvador (temperate climate). 3-4h round-trip trail, moderate level. Panoramic view of the range, the Honduras border visible on clear days. A final lookout with panoramic orientation. Cold at the summit (10-15°C). Guide recommended. Combinable with Río Sapo as a full nature day.
Morazán = a highland coffee region in full renaissance. Small growers are reclaiming the fincas abandoned during the war. Bourbon and Pacas varieties. Hands-on finca tour (2-3h, $20-30): plantation, picking (Oct-March), drying, tasting. Coffee that is fair trade and organic, supporting local communities. Café Cumbres del Caudillo (near Perquín). A cup of Morazán coffee = tasting a country reborn.

Morazán is home to pine forests unique in El Salvador (cool temperate climate). Mountain wildlife with the occasional quetzal, green parrots, birds of prey. Río Sapo = endemic crystal-clear water fish. Reserva del Sapo currently being created.
Hearty country cooking for a cold climate: frijoles montañeros, simmered soups, grilled meats, high-altitude coffee. The shuco tradition (fermented atol), an indigenous Lencaheritage. Family-run restaurants in Perquín, roadside fritangas. Authentic, unfussy, deeply comforting cooking.

At least 2 nights to truly live the experience: Day 1, Museo de la Revolución in the morning + El Mozote in the afternoon. Day 2, Río Sapo + Cerro Pericón nature or a coffee finca tour. 1 night = an express excursion from San Miguel is possible but frustrating.
To understand, read before you go: "Massacre" by Mark Danner (on El Mozote), "The Massacre at El Mozote" by Leigh Binford, or watch the documentary "El Mozote: A Story of Pain". Otherwise: MUNA in San Salvador as a pre-visit. Without context, the experience is more superficial.
At the Museo de la Revolución, the guides areformer FMLN combatants. Their personal accounts make the experience profound. Generous tips appreciated ($5-10). Allow 2-3h for the visit, don't rush. Spanish required (English-speaking guides are rare — our DMC can accompany and translate).
Private car + driver = the Toucan solution (4h SAL → Perquín, winding mountain roads). Public buses exist (8h via San Miguel, $10) but offer little comfort. Our DMC arranges direct transfers from SAL or other bases.
Cool temperate climate (12-22°C). Sweater, fleece and long pants essential (it catches people off guard). Fireplaces in some hotels (Perkin Lenca). Rain jacket in green season. Signature morning mist. Unprepared = uncomfortable.
Río Sapo and Cerro Pericón trails are poorly marked. A local guide is essential ($10-15) for safety and flora/fauna identification. More impressive in green season (May-October, more abundant water). Boots in green season. Water, snacks.
El Mozote = a place of remembrance. No selfies, no cheerful behavior. Respect for survivors who may be present. Discreet photos of the plaques OK. Donations welcome. A respectful approach — a sacred place for local communities.
