Paradise Caribbean diving

Roatán — the the largest of the Bay Islands (65 km long), 65 km north of the Honduran coast. Resting on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef — Second largest coral reef system in the world after Australia's (600 miles from Cancun to Honduras). Over 100 dive sites Accessible, clear turquoise waters (30-40m visibility), temperature 27-29°C year-round.

Multicultural island English Creole (British colonial heritage 1640-1860), Spanish, Garifuna community (Punta Gorda, Afro-Caribbean descendants). West = tourist hub: West End (pedestrian village, restaurants, diving), West Bay (one of TripAdvisor's Top 10 beaches in the world), Sandy Bay (Roatan Institute for Marine Sciences, dolphins). Center: Coxen Hole (cruise port, uninteresting), French Harbor (fishermen). Is = more authentic, empty beaches, Garifuna communities. Direct flights Houston, Atlanta, Toronto, Miami. Also via SAP with La Costeña.

Our on-the-ground tip: 4–5 nights is ideal—2–3 days of diving in West End, 1 day relaxing in West Bay, and 1 day exploring the wild east coast or Garífuna Punta Gorda. The perfect combination: Copán Archaeological Park (4 hours from SAP) → Roatán (direct flight from SAP with La Costeña/Avianca, 30 min). Or: the finale of a grand AC trip to this Caribbean paradise.

💵
CURRENCY

Lempira or USD

Lempira (HNL) is the official currency. USD widely accepted (resorts, tourist restaurants). Credit cards accepted at resorts and restaurants in the city center. ATMs in West End and Coxen Hole. Tips: 10% at restaurants, $1-2 per piece of luggage. Small bills.

Warning
SAFETY

Quiet island

Roatán = very safe vs. Honduran mainland. West End/West Bay quiet day and night, international atmosphere. Coxen Hole = okay during the day, caution late at night. East End family-friendly. Our DMC partner is following the news. Standard precautions on the beach.

⚠️ Avoid — classic pitfalls

  • Taking a short layover: 4-5 nights minimum. Less than that is a flight + adaptation and it's over.
  • West Bay 11 AM - 4 PM during high season: Overrun with cruise ship passengers. Best to go in the morning or at sunset.
  • Off-season lobster: Forbidden March-June. If proposed = illegal fishing, refuse.
  • Non-reef-safe sunscreen Destroys the reef. A law is on the way; tradition must be respected.
  • Unethical captive dolphins: RIMS Sandy Bay supervised programs OK, others = questionable.
  • Drinking tap water: Non-potable. Bottled water only.
