The capital of the hills

Tegucigalpa — nicknamed "Tegus" — capital of Honduras and its largest city (1.2 M inhabitants in the metro area), founded in 1578 by the Spanish as a mining town (silver). Set in a mountain basin at 990 m altitude, cool temperate climate (15-26°C), surrounded by green hills. Officially the capital since 1880.

Tegus = a transit capital more than a destination. Centro Histórico with the Catedral San Miguel (1782), Plaza Morazán (national hero Francisco Morazán), Iglesia Los Dolores (1715, baroque). Cerro El Picacho (1,200 m) with its Cristo del Picacho (30 m statue, panoramic viewpoint). 30 min away: Valle de Ángeles = a preserved colonial village, the capital ofHonduran craftsmanship (wood carving, leather, ceramics, weaving). 15 min away: Santa Lucía, another picturesque colonial village. Parque Nacional La Tigra 30 min away = cloud forest, Honduras's first national park (1980).

Our field tip: 1-2 nights are enough. Tegus = a transit or starting base. Prefer Valle de Ángeles or Santa Lucía for the night (charm, safety, climate). Program: 1 day Tegus Centro Histórico + Cristo Picacho, 1 day Valle de Ángeles crafts + La Tigra. Combinable with Lago de Yojoa (3h) or Comayagua (1h30, the former capital).

Duration

1-2 nights are enough

Tegus = transit or starting point. 1 night minimum, 2 nights ideal to add Valle de Ángeles + La Tigra. More = move on to Lago de Yojoa (3h) or Comayagua (1h30).

📍
BASE

Valle de Ángeles recommended

Prefer Valle de Ángeles for the night: colonial charm, cool climate (1,350 m), safety, relaxed atmosphere. Tegus visits by day (30 min taxi). Unless pure business transit = hotel near TGU airport.

Shopping bags

💵
CURRENCY

Lempira HNL or USD

Lempira (HNL) is the currency. USD widely accepted. Cards accepted in urban hotels and restaurants. ATMs everywhere in Tegus. Small Lempira bills recommended outside the capital.

🛂
Formalities

No EU visa

Passport valid 6 months. No visa for Europeans (90 days). CA-4 free movement Honduras-Guatemala-El Salvador-Nicaragua.

⚠️ Avoid — classic pitfalls

  • Stay more than 2 nights: Tegus = transit. Better: Valle, La Tigra, Lago de Yojoa.
  • Centro Tegus at night: back at the hotel before 7pm. Uber for evening trips.
  • Unofficial taxis: Uber far more reliable. Refuse unofficial street taxis.
  • Flaunting wealth: jewelry, watches, big camera bags = attracting attention. Stay discreet.
  • Driving at night winding mountain roads, little lighting. Drive by day.
  • Drinking tap water: Non-potable. Bottled water only.
