Arrival in Antigua
Guatemala City airport → Antigua (1h)
International flight, direct transfer to Antigua (45 min). Check-in at a colonial casa. First dinner in the inner courtyard of a traditional restaurant.
💡 Avoid sleeping in Guatemala City (average safety). Antigua is safer, prettier, and only 45 min from the airport.
Cultural Antigua
Full day in Antigua
Walking tour: Cathedral, Arco de Santa Catalina, Casa Santo Domingo (museum). Pepián for lunch. Afternoon at the Filadelfia coffee finca (tour + tasting).
💡 Keep your comfortable shoes on: the cobbled streets are impossible in heels.
Pacaya trek (optional) or downtime
Antigua → Pacaya (1h30 round trip)
Active option: Pacaya volcano trek (3h, still active — you roast marshmallows over hot lava). Relaxed option: a day in Antigua, Maya chocolate massage at ChocoMuseo.
💡 For keen hikers: the Acatenango trek with an overnight at altitude is BREATHTAKING (Fuego erupting at night). But it's demanding: 2 days / 1 night, 5-7h climb.
To Atitlán via Chichi
Antigua → Chichicastenango → Atitlán (4h)
Early departure to reach Chichi before 10am (Thursday or Sunday ideal). Maya market, 2h. On to Panajachel, then lancha to your village (San Marcos or Santa Cruz).
💡 Check your day: Chichi is worth TRIPLE on Thursdays and Sundays. Other days, it's dead.
Atitlán: Maya villages
Village tour by lancha
San Juan La Laguna (textile cooperatives), San Pedro (lively), Santiago Atitlán (Maximón cult). Lancha between villages. Evening sunset from your hotel.
💡 Authentic textiles are found in San Juan La Laguna, not Panajachel. Avoid the resellers.
Indian Nose & Atitlán downtime
San Juan / San Pedro
Sunrise from Indian Nose (4:30am departure, 1h30 hike). Views over the three volcanoes, the lake wrapped in mist. Back for breakfast. Afternoon kayaking or paddleboarding on the lake.
💡 The Indian Nose tour is done with a local Maya guide (40-50 Q per person). Don't go alone — the trail is not obvious in the dark.
Flight to Petén
Atitlán → Guatemala City → Flores (1h flight)
Transfer to Guatemala City, domestic flight to Flores. Check-in at Flores (a charming colonial island). Afternoon stroll around the island, swim in Lake Petén Itzá.
💡 Avoid the Guatemala-Flores night bus (12h on the road). The flight costs €100-150 but saves you 12h of fatigue.
Tikal sunrise + full site
Flores → Tikal (1h30)
3:30am departure for the sunrise tour at Temple IV. Sunrise over the jungle, howler monkeys waking up. Guided visit of the site (Temples I, II, III, IV, Mundo Perdido). Back to Flores in the late afternoon.
💡 Tikal in one day = intense. Count on 8-10h on site. Stay hydrated, bring strong mosquito repellent and closed shoes (possible snakes).
Yaxhá or downtime
Yaxhá option (1h)
Active option: the less-visited Maya site of Yaxhá, sunset over the Yaxhá lagoon. Relaxed option: a day in Flores, lake swim, rest before heading home.
💡 Yaxhá is the best-kept secret. Far fewer people than Tikal, and the sunset pyramid is unforgettable.
Return
Flores → Guatemala City → Europe
Morning flight to Guatemala City, then international flight. Farewell, Guatemala.
💡 Avoid booking an international flight before 2pm out of Guatemala City if you're coming from Flores: a safety margin is essential.
