In short
- Costa Rica is one of the best surf destinations in the world : two oceans, waves year-round, and warm water.
- Beginners: head for Tamarindo, Sámara, Jacó or Nosara, with gentle waves and plenty of schools.
- Experienced surfers: Santa Teresa, Pavones, Witch’s Rock (Pacific) and the legendary Salsa Brava at Puerto Viejo (Caribbean).
- Pacific coast: more consistent swell from May to November. Caribbean coast: best from December to March.
- No need for gear: board rentals and lessons everywhere on the spots.
Two coasts, dozens of spots, 26-29°C water, and waves almost year-round: few countries offer surfers such a complete playground. Whether you're getting on a board for the first time or chasing the perfect barrel, here's where, when, and how to surf in Costa Rica.
Why Costa Rica is a surf paradise
The country stacks up the assets: a Pacific coastline long and exposed to the swell, a Caribbean coast more under the radar but powerful, warm water that spares you the wetsuit, and a laid-back surf culture (the famous Pure lifespirit). The result: spots for every level, often lined by beaches among the most beautiful in Costa Rica.

The best spots for beginners
- Tamarind (Guanacaste): the reference for learning, progressive waves and many schools. See our page Tamarind.
- Sámara : a sheltered, gentle bay, ideal for families.
- Jacó / Playa Hermosa : easy to reach from San José, lively atmosphere.
- Nosara (Playa Guiones) : a consistent beach break in a preserved natural setting.
Spots for experienced surfers
- Santa Teresa (Nicoya peninsula): powerful, constant waves, a spot turned cult.
- Pavones (southern Pacific): one of the longest left-hand waves in the world.
- Witch’s Rock & Ollie’s Point (Guanacaste, Santa Rosa park): legendary spots, often reached by boat.
- Salsa Brava, Puerto Viejo (Caribbean): a fast, demanding reef wave, experts only.
When to surf in Costa Rica?
You can surf year-round, but the season changes by coast. On the Pacific, the swell is bigger and more regular from May to November (green season), while the Caribbean is at its best from December to March. To time your trip, see our guide When to go to Costa Rica.

Practical advice
- Rentals and lessons everywhere : no need to travel with your board for a first stay; the schools provide everything.
- Respect the local guidance : currents, tides, and right of way in the water; check with the schools.
- Combine surf and nature : between two sessions, Costa Rica offers volcanoes, forests, and exceptional wildlife.
