Climate, prices, crowds, and even the wildlife change by month and region. This guide gives you everything, month by month, to choose the best time for your profile.

Costa Rica's two seasons
Costa Rica lives to the rhythm of two seasons. The dry season, from mid-December to April, is the sunniest and most in demand: clear skies, walkable trails, it’s the tourist high season. The green season, from May to November, is often called the “rainy season”, but the term is misleading: mornings are frequently sunny and showers fall mostly in the late afternoon, before giving way to a washed sky.

January-February are the safe bets weather-wise. April and November are excellent “hinge” months. May to August offer splendid nature at a low price. September-October are the rainiest on the Pacific side, but the sunniest on the Caribbean side. December combines green nature and the return of the sun — but the holidays are pricey, book early.

The Pacific coast (Guanacaste, Nicoya, Manuel Antonio)
Ideal time from December to April: sun, beaches, and wildlife around the waterholes. September-October are the rainiest there. This is the coast of beaches and sunsets, around Manuel Antonio.
The Caribbean coast (Puerto Viejo, Tortuguero)
Its calendar is reversed: its best windows are September-October, then February-March. When the Pacific is under rain, the Caribbean shines. Tortuguero can be explored year-round by boat.
Mountains and cloud forests (Monteverde, San Gerardo de Dota)
At altitude, it's cool and humid much of the year — that's what creates the cloud forest's magic. The dry season remains more comfortable, but Monteverde is superb even under the mist.
When to go depending on what you want to experience
Whale watching
Costa Rica is one of the best places in the world for it. Two windows: July to October (southern humpbacks, around Uvita and Marino Ballena park) and December to March (northern population, on the Guanacaste side).
Seeing turtles
Green turtles at Tortuguero from July to October (peak August-September); leatherbacks from February to June; and the spectacular olive ridley “arribadas” at Ostional, mostly from August to December.
Surfing, or traveling in peace on a budget
