The Little Amazon of Costa Rica

Tortuguero — 26,600 hectares of canals, lagoons, and dense jungle on the northern Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. Nicknamed the Little Amazon, it is one of the most important nesting sites in the world for the Green turtle (up to 22,000 females per season, July-October). Accessible only by boat or plane — no roads. This inaccessibility is its strength: preserved nature, total immersion.

The experience is Full immersion : silent boat safaris at dawn (best animal sightings), overnight lodge stay in the heart of the jungle (thatched roofs, howler monkey sounds upon waking), authentic Afro-Caribbean village with its culture Coconut Milk Rice and Beans, and the sacred ritual of turtle watching — strict, regulated, magical. Sansa flight SJO-Tortuguero (25 min) or boat trip from La Pavona (1h30 immersive).

Our on-site guide (DMC since 2018): A minimum of 2 nights in Tortuguero (in a 3-day/2-night all-inclusive package including transfers from San José) — dawn water safari, turtle watching at night (in season), Cerro Tortuguero, village. Highlight combination: SJO → Tortuguero → Arenal to start with nature immersion.

📵
DISCONNECT

Limited WiFi, no network

Positive side: complete disconnection, nature immersion. Premium lodges have WiFi only in the lobby (slow). Prepare offline playlists, books, family games. A real digital detox.

🦟
HEALTH

Mandatory mosquito repellent

Humid Caribbean climate = mosquitoes. Use DEET 30%+ (Off, Repel) or icaridin (Picaridin) spray. Wear long pants after 5 p.m. There is no malaria in the area, but dengue fever is possible. Strong protection is recommended.

🚫
SWIMMING

No swimming beach

Tortuguero Beach = strong currents, occasional sharks. Swimming strictly prohibited. Premium lodges have pools. Refreshment via canals or hotel pool only.

🛂
Formalities

No EU visa < 90 days

Passport valid for 1 day after return date is sufficient. No visa for Europeans (90 days). Limited luggage on Sansa flights (14 kg).

⚠️ Avoid — classic pitfalls

  • Visit for 1 night: Minimum 2 nights (3 days/2 nights package). 1 night = just passing through, no immersion.
  • Turtle outings without a certified guide: illegal and disturbs the animals. NGO SINAC certifies local guides.
  • Photos flash on turtles: It disorients and stresses them. Strictly forbidden. Red lamps only (provided).
  • Beach swimming: Strong currents, dangerous. Strictly forbidden. Lodge pool only.
  • Underestimating mosquitoes: Humid climate. Serious DEET mosquito repellent + long pants after 5 p.m.
  • Count on the cellular network: very limited. Prepare offline before arrival. True disconnection.

Your questions, our answers

The 6 most frequently asked questions about Tortuguero.

How many nights to plan for in Tortuguero?
Minimum 2 nights (3 days/2 nights package from San José with transfers included). 3 nights is ideal to fully enjoy: dawn safari + night turtles + village + Cerro + kayaking. More = redundant.
When to observe sea turtle nesting?
Green sea turtles: July to October (Aug-Sep photos, up to 22,000 nests). Leatherback turtles: February to April (rare, more spectacular, up to 2 m). Mandatory exit with certified guide, red lights, no flash photography.
How do I get there from San Jose?
Two options: vol Sansa/Skyway 25 minutes ($120–150 per person, ideal for a short stay) or boat trip (Transfer SJO → La Pavona in 2h30 + immersive boat ride on the canals 1h30). The classic boat is part of the experience. All premium lodges offer both options.
When is the best time to go?
Tortuguero is humid all year round — No true dry season. For green turtles: July-October. For navigable canals and wildlife: September-November (optimal water level). To avoid: too much rain in November. December-March OK for the jungle, without turtles.
Is Tortuguero suitable for families?
Yes, suitable for ages 6-8. High security in the lodges, animals easily visible, unforgettable experience for children (turtles, jungle, boat). Dedicated family lodges (Pachira, Mawamba). Avoid with very young children (under 4) due to mosquitoes and long travel times.
