Fifteen days is the length I recommend most often: enough to see the essentials of Costa Rica without rushing. After hundreds of itineraries built in the field, one route keeps coming back because it almost always works. Here is, stage by stage, the 15-day Costa Rica itinerary I offer my travelers — with variants to suit your wishes. Short on time? See our 10-day itinerary.

The ideal 15-day itinerary at a glance
| Stage | Nights | Don't miss it |
|---|---|---|
| San Jose | 1 | Arrival, getting started |
| Tortuguero | 2 | Canals by boat, wildlife, turtles |
| Arenal / La Fortuna | 3 | Volcano, hot springs, hanging bridges |
| Monteverde | 2 | Cloud forest, zipline, hummingbirds |
| Pacific coast (Manuel Antonio / Nicoya) | 4 | Wildlife, beaches, rest |
| Back to San José | 1 | Tárcoles bridge, departure |
Thirteen nights spread over five places, drives of 2 to 4 hours maximum, and a build-up in intensity until the final beach rest. That's the backbone; we then adjust it to your pace.

The details, stage by stage
Day 1 — Arrival in San José
Welcome at the airport and night in San Jose or in the central valley. You recover from the flight and settle the logistics: the trip truly begins tomorrow.
Days 2-3 — Tortuguero, the wild Caribbean
Road to the Caribbean lowlands then boarding a boat: Tortuguero can only be reached by water. Boat safaris in the canals, caimans, monkeys, birds — and, from July to October, green turtle nesting. To know everything about this first stop, read our Tortuguero guide.

Days 4-6 — Arenal and La Fortuna
On to the volcano Arenal : hanging bridges, trails over the lava flows, the La Fortuna waterfall, and natural hot springs to end the day. One of families’ favorite stages.
Days 7-8 — Monteverde, the cloud forest
A scenic road to Monteverde : mist, orchids, more than 400 bird species, hummingbird gardens, and a zipline over the canopy.

Days 9-13 — The Pacific coast
Down to the Pacific for the final reward: the wildlife of Manuel Antoniopark, beaches, sunsets, and slow days. You alternate nature and lazing before the return.

Days 14-15 — Return and departure
Road to San Jose with one last stop at the Tárcoles bridge to salute the crocodiles. Last night near the airport, then the flight home — or a beach or nature extension.
Variants to suit your wishes
This framework adapts easily. Here are the adjustments I suggest most often, detailed in our travel collections.
- Nature+ version (Forest Collection): part of the beach time is replaced with the Osa peninsula and Corcovado, a biodiversity sanctuary. See the Forest Collection.
- Family version: a lighter pace, more nights at Arenal and on the beach, gentle activities.
- Beach+ version: Monteverde is shortened to add Nicoya (Sámara, Santa Teresa) on the Guanacaste side.
- No-driving version: as an escorted tour or with a private driver.
How long per stage, car or driver?
The golden rule: 2 to 3 nights per stage, never more than 4 hours of driving in a row. For the drives, a 4×4 is comfortable and makes the back roads accessible; with children or to rest, a private driver on some portions changes everything. You can also book everything turnkey with real-time availability on Toucan Dynamics.
When to go on this tour?
This itinerary works year-round. The dry season (December-April) makes the roads easier; the green season (May-November) offers splendid nature, fewer people, and better prices. All the details in our guide When to go to Costa Rica. To estimate the bill, see our detailed Costa Rica budget.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 15 days enough for Costa Rica?
Yes, it’s the ideal length to combine volcano, forest, and beach without rushing. Under 10 days, better to focus on two or three regions.
Should you rent a car or hire a driver?
Both work. The 4×4 offers freedom; a private driver removes all fatigue, especially with family.
Which direction should you do the loop?
San José → Tortuguero → Arenal → Monteverde → Pacific is the smoothest, but the order reverses depending on your flights and the season.
