Panama travel budget: how much does it cost in 2026?

📅 8 June 2026 ✍️ TRISTAN MARTIN ⏱ 8 min read

In short: The budget for a Panama trip depends mostly on your style. Allow, excluding the international flight, about US$30 to 50 per day backpacker-style, US$75 to 150 in comfort, and more at the high end. Good news: the country uses the US dollar, which simplifies everything. The Paris–Panama flight takes about 11 hours.

“How much does a trip to Panama cost?” The question comes up with every project, and the honest answer is: it depends on you. Between the backpacker sleeping in hostels and the traveler aiming for lodges with a view, the gap is enormous. After years putting together stays in this country, here are realistic ranges, line by line, to build a Panama travel budget with no bad surprises.

The dollar, Panama's budget asset

First life-changing point: Panama has adopted the US dollar as its currency (the local balboa is pegged 1:1 and circulates only as coins). No risky conversions, no surprise exchange fees: you think directly in dollars. Cards work everywhere in town, but keep cash for remote areas like San Blas, where everything is paid in cash.

Budget by tier (excluding international flight, per day per person)

StyleBudget / dayWhat it includes
Backpacker≈ US$30–50Hostel/dorm, local food, buses, free sites
Comfort (mid-range)≈ US$75–150Private room, restaurants, a few excursions
High endUS$200 and upCharming lodges and hotels, domestic flights, private guides

As a benchmark, a two-week mid-range stay often comes to US$1,100 to 2,100 per person on the ground, plus the international flight. It's an order of magnitude: the split between islands, mountains, and city moves the bill.

The international flight

The Paris–Panama route takes about 11 hours on a direct flight. The price varies strongly by season: higher during school holidays and the dry season (December-April), more affordable in the green season. Booking two to three months ahead remains the best strategy. To choose your dates, see our guide when to visit Panama.

Accommodation, meals, transport

  • Accommodation : from US$15-25 for a dorm bed to US$60-120 for a comfortable room, up to US$200 and more for a charming lodge or an island eco-lodge.
  • Meal : a local daily special (“comida corriente”) costs US$5-8; a restaurant dinner, US$15-30. Panama City is more expensive than the rest of the country.
  • Transport : domestic flights (to David/Boquete or Bocas) are short and reasonable; long-distance buses very economical. For car rental, the advertised rates start low, but, mandatory insurance included, expect more like US$40 to 60 per day depending on the vehicle.

Boat excursions (Bocas, San Blas) weigh on the activities budget.

The “activities” line

It's often what makes the difference. A few benchmarks: entrance to the visitor center of the Panama Canal (Miraflores) runs around US$17-22 ; a boat outing at Bocas del Toro, US$25-40; a San Blas excursion with transport and a night, US$100 to 200; a coffee finca visit in Boquete, US$25-40. Conversely, fine experiences are free or almost: strolling the Old Town, admiring the forts of Portobelo, swimming at a public beach. Our canal guide and our article what to do in Panama detail these outings.

A concrete example: 2 weeks as a couple, comfort tier

To make things concrete, here's a typical estimate for two people, 14 days, mid-range (excluding international flight), with the capital + San Blas + Boquete + Bocas del Toro itinerary:

Line itemEstimate (2 pers.)
Accommodation (13 nights)≈ US$1,100–1,800
Meal≈ US$500–800
Domestic flights + transfers≈ US$400–700
Excursions (canal, San Blas, coffee, boat)≈ US$500–900
Extras (souvenirs, tips, contingencies)≈ US$200–400
Total on the ground (2 pers.)≈ US$2,700–4,600

That's about US$1,350 to 2,300 per person, excluding the international flight. Backpacker-style, you nearly halve it; at the high end, the bill can double.

Tips, taxes, and small fees to plan for

At restaurants, a 10% service charge is often added; otherwise, leaving 10% is appreciated. Hotels add a stay tax of about 10%. Also plan small tips for guides and drivers, and always keep cash in small bills for San Blas, the markets, and rural areas, where cards don't work. Finally, think about good travel insurance: it's the item people forget and never regret having taken.

Our tricks to keep the budget under control

  • Travel in the green season (May-November): gentler flights and hotels, superb nature.
  • Mix the tiers : one exceptional night in San Blas, simple addresses elsewhere.
  • Eat local : the foundations and markets offer excellent meals for a few dollars.
  • Group the excursions : a well-built itinerary limits the drives and the fees. That's where a local agency saves you time and money.

Paying on site: cards, cash, and ATMs

Panama is one of the easiest Central American countries for payments. Bank cards are accepted in most hotels, restaurants, and shops in the cities. ATMs are plentiful in Panama City, David, or Boquete, but thin out as you move away: withdraw before heading to San Blas or rural areas, where everything is paid in cash. Keep small bills ($1, $5, and $10) for taxis, tips, and markets. Notify your bank of your trip and check the foreign withdrawal fees.

Note: the cost of living varies strongly by region. Panama City has capital-city rates, while the provinces (Chiriquí, Azuero) remain markedly more affordable. Adapting your itinerary also means adjusting your budget.
