“When should you visit Panama?” It's the first question travelers ask me, and my answer fits in one sentence: almost year-round, as long as you choose your region by season. Panama is a country with two faces — Pacific and Caribbean — that don't live the weather at the same rhythm. In fifteen years organizing trips in Central America, I've learned that here the “rainy season” is nothing to shy away from. Here, month by month, is what I really advise.

Panama's two seasons

Panama has two seasons, defined by rain more than by temperature (hot and stable year-round, around 28-32 °C on the coasts):

• The dry season (“verano”), from mid-December to mid-April : the fine weather, especially on the Pacific slope and in Panama City. It's the most sought-after period, ideal for combining city, canal, islands, and mountains.
• The green season, from May to November : often sunny mornings, then tropical showers at the end of the day. Nature is dazzling, prices gentler, and the sites less crowded.

It's one of the country's great nature events. Humpback whales travel up into the warm waters of the Pacific Panamanian to breed: the observation season runs from July to October, with a peak often in August-September. Pacific or Caribbean: two weather patterns to know

It's the point many guidebooks forget. The two coasts aren't dry at the same time:

• On the Pacific side (Panama City, Azuero peninsula, Pearl Islands): drier from December to April. September-October are the rainiest months there.
• On the Caribbean side (Bocas del Toro, Portobelo, San Blas): the Caribbean keeps humidity year-round, but offers fine drier windows in September-October and in February-March.

Tourist high and low season

The high season follows the fine weather: December to April, with peaks at Christmas, New Year, and Holy Week (Semana Santa). Book your hotels and flights early for these dates. Conversely, May, June, and November are excellent “smart” months: superb nature, reduced crowds, and better rates. Festivals and events: Panama through the seasons

Choosing your date also means choosing your atmosphere. A few events are worth the detour:

• Carnival (February or early March) : one of the liveliest in Latin America, notably in Las Tablas, on the Azuero peninsula. Four days of music, water, and murgas. Atmosphere guaranteed, but book early: the whole country is celebrating.
• Holy Week (March-April) : processions and traditions across the country; many Panamanians travel, so beaches and hotels fill up.
• Patron saint festivals and whale season (July-October) : on the Pacific coast, a chance to combine local culture and boat outings.
• National holidays (November) : the “month of the homeland” strings together parades and brass-band music, especially in Panama City.

What to pack depending on the season?

Whatever the period, pack light clothes, a swimsuit, and good sunscreen. In the green season, add a light rain jacket and quick-drying shoes. For the Boquete highlands, slip in a small fleece: the evenings are cool there year-round. Finally, an effective mosquito repellent is essential, especially in the forest and near the coasts.

How long to plan?
