The question comes up every time. How much time should be allocated, how much does it cost, when to go. I answer the same questions an average of fifteen times a month. Here's what I really say, without mincing words or Lonely Planet promises.
How much time to plan: the truth
Eight days is the minimum. Not out of dogma—out of experience.
I’ve had clients go for six days. They always came back disappointed, or rather frustrated. They had seen Panama City and a bit of Azuero, but they hadn’t had time to relax. It’s a shame to pay for a long-haul flight for that. The time difference in Panama is seven hours from Paris. Count two days to recover from it.
Here are my thresholds, in the order I recommend them:
- Eight to ten days Panama City, El Valle de Antón, Azuero Peninsula. That's the bare minimum to understand the country.
- Twelve to fourteen days : Add Boquete (Barú Volcano, specialty coffee) or Bocas del Toro (Caribbean). Panama takes on another dimension.
- Fifteen to twenty-one days : we integrate Coiba, San Blas as an immersion experience, or even a corner of Darién for the adventurous.
- Three weeks and more It's starting to become a package. Our Absolute Panama and Costa Rica program is fifteen to twenty-one days. It's the most comprehensive we offer.
The trap of the five-to-six days is that we chain together two destinations while skipping steps. In the end, we feel like we've just gone sightseeing. That's not my goal when I plan a trip.
What's the real budget
Panama is more expensive than most people think. It's the perverse effect of the US dollar circulating as local currency – prices align with American standards more than Central American ones. You can still travel very cheaply if you know where to look.
Excluding international flights, here are the price ranges I'm providing for May 2026, for two people in a double room:
- Budget travel: 80 to 110 euros per day per person. Well-maintained three-star hotels, local meals in comedores ($5-8 per dish), long-distance buses, essential tours on foot or by taxi.
- Comfort travel: 150 to 200 euros per day per person. Four-star boutique hotels, premium rental car, mid-range restaurants (€15-25), one or two guided activities per day.
- Premium voyage: 250 to 400 euros per day per person. Eco-lodges of reference (I particularly like the Selva Negra Cabanas), private transfers, exclusive experiences — charter flight to San Blas, Geisha tasting at $80 per cup.
A few more positions to fill:
- Domestic flight Panama City to Bocas del Toro: $100 to $150 one-way. Book two months in advance.
- Coiba National Park admission: $30 per person.
- Tips: 10 % are expected in restaurants. In some restaurants, they are already included in the bill (check beforehand).
Card or cash Your credit card is accepted everywhere in tourist areas. However, for Azuero, San Blas, and the Chiriquí hinterland, plan for $100 to $200 in cash. There are no ATMs on the San Blas Peninsula.
When to Go: What the Guides Don't Tell You
Panama has two seasons. But they are not symmetrical. And the regions have microclimates that can be surprising.
Dry season: December to mid-April. Blue skies are practically guaranteed, temperatures are stable (24–32°C depending on altitude), and the sea is calm everywhere. It’s also the peak tourist season. If you want the best hotels in Casco Viejo or Boquete, book three to four months in advance—especially around Christmas, New Year’s, and Holy Week.
My strong opinion : The period between late December and early January is very busy and expensive. If you can postpone your trip until late January or February, you'll save 30 % on rates and avoid the crowds.
High season: mid-April through November. Late-afternoon showers on the Pacific coast, landscapes so green they hurt your eyes, reasonable prices, and a more local vibe. I absolutely love traveling to Panama in May and June—it’s my favorite time of year. The colors are at their peak, and the showers mostly fall between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m., so we have all morning and late afternoon to ourselves for sightseeing.
The trap to avoid : September–October is the peak of the rainy season on the Pacific coast. Unless you really want to travel off-season, I wouldn't recommend it.
The Unique Character of the Caribbean that no one mentions: Bocas del Toro and San Blas have an inverse microclimate. July and August are surprisingly dry there, while it's raining across the rest of the country. For those who can only travel in the middle of summer, this is a golden opportunity.
Seasonal Bonus Humpback whale watching from July to October in the Gulf of Chiriquí and off Azuero. Trips depart from Pedasí or Boca Chica. It's one of the most impressive natural spectacles I've seen in the region.
How to get around
Panama is small (half the size of France) but stretches a long way from east to west. The mode of transportation must be adapted to the terrain.
Rental car Ideal for Panama City, El Valle, Azuero, or if you're heading to Boquete. French permits accepted. Main roads are in good condition; some rural areas require a light SUV. Fuel is around $0.90 per liter—cheaper than in Europe.
Domestic flight : indispensable for Bocas del Toro and San Blas. Air Panama operates from Albrook Airport (not to be confused with Tocumen, the international airport). Fares between $100 and $350 depending on the destination. Book two to three months in advance.
Express bus If you are traveling alone or as a couple without children, the bus network from Albrook Terminal covers all major cities. Comfortable, air-conditioned, and inexpensive ($5-15). I recommend it to independent travelers.
Formalities
For French nationals in 2026: No visa required For tourist stays of less than 180 days. Passport valid for at least six months after the return date. Upon arrival, you may be asked for proof of a return ticket and proof of funds (your bank card is sufficient in practice).
Vaccines : No mandatory vaccinations from directly from Europe. Recommended: DTP, Hepatitis A and B, Typhoid up to date. Yellow fever mandatory if arriving from a country where it circulates. Antimalarial recommended if planning to visit Darién or Guna Yala—otherwise unnecessary.
Security Panama is one of the safest countries in Central America. Normal vigilance is advised in large cities (keep bags closed, wear discreet jewelry). I avoid the Darién region bordering Colombia unless accompanied by professionals.
